SCHERTZ HISTORICAL PRESERVATION COMMITTEE
MEETING OF July 28, 2011
CALL TO ORDER
Chairman Weirtz called the meeting to order at 6:30 with a quorum present.
Voting members present: Merle Behne, Tom DeKunder, Lou Foehrkolb, Gail Hyatt, Debbie
Krause, Cynthia Palmer, Pete Perez, Dean Weirtz, Andreas Wooten.
Associate Member present; Bob Crawford, Dickie Day, Diana Webb, and Tim Webb.
Member Emeritus: Rose Ackermann
Chairman Weirtz introduced and welcomed the guest speaker Mr. Michael Kihntoph.
DISCUSSIONIACTION ITEMS
1. Minutes ---Consideration andlor action regarding the appn-oval of the minutes of April 28,
2011. Lou Foehrkolb made a motion to accept the minutes and Andreas Wooten
seconded the motion which was carried by a unanimous vote.
2, Fund Expenditures -Consideration andlor action regarding the submission of member
expense vouchers. Chairman Weirtz submitted a request for reimbursement in the
amount of $1284.57 in expenses for seven varied landmark markers, postal costs and
miscellaneous expenses from multiple vendoxs. A motion to accept the voucher and
approve reimbursement was made by Cynthia Palmer and seconded by Debbie Krause.
The motion was passed by a unanimous vote.
Additionally, Andreas Wooten made a motion to allocate $300 for a landmark plaque far
the Visitor Center at Kramer House. Debbie Krause seconded the motion which carried
unanimously.
Tom DeKunder made a motion to provide funds for up to three members of the
committee to attend a Texas History symposium on Qctober 151 in Austin. The motion
was seconded by Gail Hyatt and carried by unanimous vote.
Merle Behne made a motion to approve additional purchases of $800 of generic supplies
including landmark plaques of various types. The motion was seconded by Pete Perez
and was carried unanimously.
3. Treasurer's Report -Consideration and/ox action regarding Committee expenses and
income to date for the Calendar Year 2011. Committee Treasurer Lou Foehrkolb
reported that the City had maintained the Committee's budget for the next fiscal year at
$5100 and offered concrete suggestions as to how to allocate remaining funds from the
of the original settlers of the Corral community whose families funded the building of the
Chapel in 1905. A historic landmark marker was placed at the entrance to the Chapel.
Several Schertz City officials were in attendance. It was a very well received event. There
was excellent publicity afforded this event {Northeast Herald, Today's Catholic Magazine,
Schertz Magazine and the New Braunfels Herald --Zeitung)
Chairman Weirtz reported that he has continued working with the residents of Corral
Settlement to prepare a proper application for a State of Texas subject marker to be placed at
a key site within the community. A draft narrative application has been submitted to the
Texas Historical Commission for review. A funding drive is underway to collect $1600 for
the cast of an application and historic marker. Another application for declaring the
Wenzel-St. Joseph's Cemetary as historic has also been sent to the State of Texas through
the Corral County Historic Commision. The Corral Settlement group will meet again in
October,
Chairman Weirtz met with the owners of the historic blacksmith shop in Corral (Mr. & Mrs.
Zipp) regarding the issue of preservation of that landmark facility. The Zipp's will be
considering what they would like to do with the building.
Chairman Weirtz reported on the publication of the Spring REMEMBRANCES Newsletter
and two REMEMBRANCES Special Edition Articles.
Chairman Weirtz reported on a visit to Sche~•tz by Ms. Leah Brown, former Schertz resident
and now Program Officer for the Southwest Office of the National Ti~ast For Historic
Preservation. Ms Brown was given a briefing on the historic elements of the Schertz
community and of the work of the Committee.
Discussions were held regarding the possible creation of a pamphlet or booklet that would
serve to promote the City of Schertz as a visitor destination city. Such a booklet would
include the historic legacy of Schertz. Volunteers to serve on a subcommittee to explore
development of such a product included Dean Weritz, Debbie Krause, Cynthia Palmer and
Judy VLlomack.
Kramer House: A written request is still pending with the City Manager's Office regarding
the placement of a railroad display on the outside grounds of the Kramer House
properly. A design plan has been submitted to the City Manager. Additional displays
added to the facility include two local scenes.

ADJODRNMENT;
There being na further business before the committee, a motion was made by Gail Hyatt
and seconded by Pete Perez to adjourn the meeting. The motion carried unanimously.
