Board Members present: Johnie McDow, Chairman, John Sullivan, Vice - Chairman, Bill Bosch,
Jim Fowler, Sally Macias, Phil Rowland, Floy Simmons and Ron Washington.
Staff present: Brian James, Executive Director Development Services, Chuck Van Zandt,
Director, Parks, Recreation and Community Services, Lauren Shrum, Assistant Director, Parks,
Recreation and Community Services and Sandy Bryant, Sr. Administrative Assistant.
Others present: Mr. Fred Archer and Mr. Joel Tanner
Call to order. Meeting was called to order by Johnie McDow, Chairman at 5:30 p.m.
Hearing of residents:
There were no residents to be heard.
Regular Agenda:
Agenda Item No. 1. Minutes. Consideration and /or action regarding the approval of the minutes
from the November 28, 2016 regular meeting.
Motion was made to approve the minutes from the November 28, 2016 Schertz Parks and
Recreation Advisory Board regular meeting as amended.

Agenda Item No. 2. Introduction of New Advisory Board Members. New Parks Advisory Board
members, Mr. Phil Rowland, Mr. Ron Washington and alternate member Mr. Jim Fowler were
introduced and ask to tell the Board a little about themselves. The Board then introduced
themselves to the new members.
Agenda Item No. 3. Updated Parks Inventory and Parks Amenities Standards. Ms. Lauren Shrum
updated the Advisory Board on the Park Departments plans to standardize the amenities in the Parks
using the National Recreation and Parks Association (NR-PA) standards. The Parks would have the
same types of benches, picnic tables and water fountains. Advisory Board questioned how the
standardization would take place, and Ms. Shrum stated all new parks would have to meet the
standards before being accepted and the existing parks would update as the items are replaced. No
action was taken on this item discussion only.
Agenda Item No. 4. Update on the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization Transportation
Alternatives Project Submittal Ms. Shrum updated the Advisory Board that the Alamo Area
Metropolitan Planning Organization Transportation Alternatives Project application has been
submitted and should hear mid -June 2017 if approved. There is an MPO public meeting being held
on February 8, 2017 at the VIA Metro Center in San Antonio from 6 -8pm and she encouraged all of
the Advisory Board members to attend if they can, to show support for the City of Schertz's project.
Reauests and Announcements:
Agenda Item No. 5. Request by Advisory Board Chairman and Board members for items to be
placed on a future Board agenda. The Advisory Board did not request any items for future agendas.
Agenda Item No. 6. Announcements by Advisory Board Chairman and members Ms. Shrum
announced the Elf Movie at Pickrell Park was a huge success. Buddy the Elf was extremely
popular for photos and hugs, the hayride was full and non -stop during the event, photos with Santa
was a big hit thanks to photographer, Ms. Sullivan. Everyone enjoyed the elves four main food
groups, candy, candy canes, candy corn and syrup (on their pancakes). Ms. Shrum wanted to give a
special thank you to the Schertz YMCA who cooked and help serve pancakes to everyone and to the
Schertz Area Senior Center who made popcorn for everyone.
The Schertz Aquatic Facility Grand Opening was on January 9, 2017. A large crowd including, the
Steele and Clemens High School swim teams, the BVYA swim team, City and County officials,
members of the Schertz Area Senior Center and the general public. After the dunking of the Schertz
City Mayor in the pool there was open swim time for everyone.
The next Advisory Board meeting will be February 27, 2017.
