03-27-2017 MinutesSCHERTZ PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD MEETING: March 27 2017 Minutes LOCATION: 1400 Schertz Parkway, Schertz, Texas Bob Andrews Conference Room in City Hall Board Members present: John Sullivan, Vice - Chairman, Reginna Agee, Bill Bosch, Jim Fowler, Sally Macias, Phil Rowland, Floy Simmons and Ron Washington. Staff present: Brian James, Executive Director Development Services, Chuck Van Zandt, Parks Director, Parks, Recreation and Community Services and Sandy Bryant, Sr. Administrative Assistant. Others present: Mr. Fred Archer, Fredy Degollado, YMCA and Mr. Joel Tanner Call to order. Meeting was called to order by John Sullivan, Jr., Vice - Chairman at 5:30 p.m. Hearing of residents: There were no residents to be heard. Regular Agenda: Agenda Item No. 1. YMCA Pools Updates. Mr. Fredy Degollado, YMCA District Vice President updated the Advisory Board on the mission of the YMCA. The Schertz Family YMCA has over 12,082 members, over 500 seniors became active and engaged through the Schertz Area Senior Center, over 40,000 children served in Child Watch & Kids Club program areas, and over 400 swim lessons have been conducted at the Schertz Aquatic Center since it opened in January. Agenda Item No. 2. Minutes. Consideration and /or action regarding the approval of the minutes from the February 27, 2017 regular meeting. Motion was made to approve the minutes from the February 27, 2017 Schertz Parks and Recreation Advisory Board regular meeting as amended. Motion: Phil Rowland Second: Ron Washington Ayes: Phil Rowland, Ron Washington, John Sullivan, Vice - Chairman, Reginna Agee, Bill Bosch, Jim Fowler, Sally Macias and Floy Simmons. Nays: None Abstains: None Approved: 8 -0 Agenda Item No. 3. Committee of Committees Advisory Board (CCAB) Update. Ms. Floy Simmons briefed the Advisory Board on actions taken at the last CCAB meeting. Ms. Simmons stated the CCAB discussed the results of the Schertz Community Survey and would be taking a closer look at enforcement of codes and ordinances which citizens were the least happy with. The Advisory Board requested the Citizens Survey be put on the agenda for the next Advisory Board meeting. Requests and Announcements: Agenda Item No. 4. Request by Advisory Board Chairman and Board members for items to be placed on a future Board agenda. The Advisory Board requested the following items be put on future agendas: • Schertz Community Survey Report • Homestead and Hill Top Parks updates. • Date for next Advisory Board parks tour. Agenda Item No. 6. Announcements by Advisory Board Chairman and members Mr. Van Zandt briefed the Advisory Board on the Bluegrass Music Event at Pickrell Park on March 25, 2017. An estimated 250 people attended the event and participated in the banjo making, the hayride, enjoyed snow cones and listening to the music. He reminded the Advisory Board of the upcoming event Field of Dreams Movie at the Schertz Ballpark on April 8, 2017 and the Community Volunteer Fair on April 13, 2017 at the Civic Center. Mr. Van Zandt also briefed them about the Parks Department looking into a National Recreation and Park Association grant opportunity called Meet Me at the Park. Mr. Jim Fowler briefed the Advisory Board that the next Love Where You Live event would be First Street cleanup on May 6, 2017. The next Advisory Board meeting will be April 24, 2017.
