Board Members present: John Sullivan, Vice - Chairman, Bill Bosch, Jim Fowler, Sally Macias, Phillip
Rowland, Robert Sheridan, Floy Simmons and Ron Washington.
Staff present: Brian James, Executive Director Development Services, Chuck Van Zandt, Parks
Director, Parks, Recreation and Community Services, Lauren Shrum, Assistant Director, Parks,
Recreation and Community Services and Sandy Bryant, Sr. Administrative Assistant.
Others present: Mr. Fred Archer and Mr. Joel Tanner
Call to order. Meeting was called to order by Mr. John Sullivan, Vice - Chairman at 5:32 p.m.

ReL-ular ALenda:
Agenda Item No. 1. Minutes. Consideration and /or action regarding the approval of the minutes from
the June 26, 2017 regular meeting.
Motion was made to approve the minutes from the June 26, 2017 Schertz Parks and Recreation
Advisory Board regular meeting.

Fowler, Robert Sheridan, Floy Simmons and Ronald Washington.

Aizenda Item No. 2. Request for Park Dedication for Mary Burks. Mr. Chuck VanZandt and Ms. Lauren
Shrum briefed the Advisory Board on a request by Ms. Cathy Calhoun, the daughter of Mary Burks to
have a park dedicated for her mother. The Advisory Board felt that the request does not meet the current
criteria of the Advisory Board for naming of a park after an individual and recommended the staff
contact Ms. Calhoun regarding the request and suggest that she consider the possibility of nominating
her mother for the Steve Simonson Award.
Motion was made to have staff contact Ms. Calhoun and let her know that currently her mother does not
meet the Advisory Board criteria for the naming of a park, but that she consider nominating her mother
for the Steve Simonson Award.

Agenda Item No. 3. Naming of No -Name Park. Mr. Shrum briefed the board that No -Name Park did
not have a geographical fit, an ecological fit, a historical fit or a non - living person associated with the
park as per the Advisory Board criteria for naming a park. Mr. VanZandt noted the park had been
referred to as No -Name Park since the determination of the park as a City owned park. After discussion
by the board.
Motion was made to name the park No -Name Park.

Requests and Announcements:
Agenda Item No. 4. Request by Advisory Board Chairman and Board members for items to be placed
on a future Board agenda. The Advisory Board requested the following items be included on future
agendas:
Date for the next parks tour.
Agenda Item No. 5. Announcements by Advisory Board Chairman and members. Vice - Chairman
Sullivan noted the improvements at Pickrell Park Pool were very much appreciated. Ms. Floy Simmons
noted there was no CCAB meeting in June. Mr. Van Zandt and Ms. Shrum briefed the Advisory Board
on the City's upcoming Community budget meetings:
• August 10, 2017, 6:30pm at Schertz United Methodist Church.
• August 16, 2017, 6:30pm at Corbett Middle School.
• August 17, 2017, 6:30pm at Schertz North Center.
Ms. Shrum also briefed the Advisory Board on the upcoming Texas Master Naturalist training class
being offered September 5, 2017 through November 28, 2017, every other Tuesday from 6 -9pm at
Schertz North Center. Informational meeting for the training will be held August 1, 2017 from 6:30 -
7:30pm at the Schertz North Center.
Ms. Shrum added that the Solar Eclipse Viewing at Crescent Bend Nature Park will be August 21, 2017
from Noon to 2pm and Paws in the Pool will be September 9, 2017 from Noon to 4pm at Pickrell Park
Pool and September 10, 2017 from Noon to 4pm at Wendy Swan Pool. She noted the Parks Department
will be doubling the number of events for next year, adding more adult and teen events. The next
Advisory Board meeting will be August 28, 2017.
