09-17 LAB MinutesSCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MEETING September 11, 2017 Members Present: Patti Dilworth, Cindy Vigil, Ruth Tienor, Laura Wilson, Carol Cyr, Patti Paulson, Margaret Riley, Neota Brady, Sandy Keiser, Joanne Ward, Dawn Fgueras, Bobbie Boyce. Melissa Uhlhorn, Library Director. Brian James, City Manager's Office. HEARING OF RESIDENTS: None CALL TO ORDER: Patti Dilworth called the meeting to order at 6:32 p.m. REGULAR AGENDA: 1. Minutes: Consideration and /or action regarding the approval of the minutes of the August 7, 2017 meeting. Ruth Tienor moved to accept the August 2017 Minutes with no corrections. Patti Paulson seconded the motion. Motion carried. The August 7, 2017 Minutes were approved with no corrections. 2. Treasurer's Reports: Consideration and /or action regarding the approval of the July 2017 Treasurer 's Reports. The July 2017 Treasurer's Report reflected income of $3,452.76 and expenses of $3,372.79 leaving a balance of $18,626.89 in the cash account. Joanne Ward moved to accept the July 2017 Treasurer's Reports as presented. Ruth Tienor seconded the motion. The motion carried. The July 2017 Treasurer's Reports were approved. 3. Librarian Report: Librarian reported on the following items: July, 2017 Stats: Public Volunteer # of Computer Total Circulation Head Count Hours Volunteers Usage 2,810 36,943 18,036 Not avail. This could be due, in part, to patrons bringing their own personal devices into the library. - Schertz librarians visited 4 SCUCISD schools and spoke with parents, teachers, counselors and librarians regarding tutoring resources available at the Schertz Library. - Brain Fuse tutoring software contract will be renewed by the library. - Outreach has been in a top priority in the previous month. - The effects of Hurricane Harvey will delay inter - library loans as several branches remain closed at this time. - The Schertz Library had no roof damage due to Hurricane Harvey, but there was some leaking from the windows. - Schertz Facilities department is researching outside cleaning company options for the library and the Parks Department is working on new landscaping options (to include the courtyard). 4. Bookstore Report: Committee reported on the following items: General Operations. - The bookstore Volunteer Handbook continues to be revised. - Quality book donations are down currently and there is the possibility that the Fall Book Sale will need to be cancelled (room currently available Nov 17 -18 only). The next Book Sale thereafter will be in February 2018. - The new bookstore volunteers are working out well. - Vintage book sales have recently increased. 5. Committees of Committees Advisory Board(CCAB) Update: Brian James Topics discussed included the following_ - A summary handout was provided. - Highlights discussed included posting rezoning signs, public input for a new name for "No Name Park ", road improvements and new businesses for Schertz. DISCUSSION & POSSIBLE ACTION: 6. Library parking lot: Melissa Uhlhorn The Schertz Police Department has been present in the mornings to notify students and parents of Clemens High School to not park in the Schertz Library parking lot. Signs are posted as well and there have only been minor issues so far, but the process has been better than expected. Additional crossing guards have recently been approved by the City. Food truck vendors have been temporarily relocated to assist with congestion and traffic flow. ANNOUNCEMENTS: 7. Items by the Library Board Members: Briefing on the following items: - Correspondence received by the Secretary: None received. -Other announcements by Library Board Members: None. -Call for items to be included on the next agenda: Tutoring software, Brain Fuse and additional projects will be discussed by Melissa Uhlhorn for Board consideration.
