2012 Spring Remembrances Newsletter 1 Remembrances Newsletter of the Schertz Historical Preservation Committee Spring Edition 2012 City Mayor Leaves a Legacy of Friendship and Leadership Our City Mayor Hal Baldwin passed away of heart complications on April 6, 2012 (Good Friday). Hal was involved in Schertz City affairs as either a school board employee, a City Councilman or as Mayor for more than forty years. He was well respected as a community leader throughout the region and considered as a friend to those he served. One of the articles in this period’s REMEMBRANCES Special Edition Articles (2012-6) addresses Hal’s leadership legacy. He was the founder of the Schertz Historical Preservation Committee and our strongest supporter throughout. New Committee Member Aboard Welcome aboard to our newest Committee member, Barbara Hall. Barbara became a member as of January 31, 2012 and began contributing to our group’s work immediately. Historic Landmark Nomination Applications Approved by Committee Three Schertz landmark properties were nominated for historic designation by the Committee at its April meeting. The properties include: Kneuper General Store (Comal Settlement – circa 1911), ACE Hardware Store/Wm Schertz Mercantile – circa 1906, Old Schertz Bank Bldg. – circa 1913. Historic Landmark Dedication Planning in Progress The Committee in concert with members of the Comal Settlement Association and the Comal County Historical Commission are in the early stages of planning for the historic landmark dedication ceremony in honor of the naming of Saint Joseph’s Cemetery (Comal Settlement area) as both a State of Texas and a Schertz City Landmark Cemetery. 2 The date of the dedication and invitations to the event will be available in a few weeks. This event will be open to the general public and no RSVP is needed. The cemetery is located just off of FM 482 at Wenzel Lane. City of Schertz Planning “Charrette” for Downtown Schertz and North Schertz Two of the City’s most historic areas are soon to be the subject of discussions among members of a planning group and the citizens of Schertz. These discussions (referred to as a “Charrette”) will deal with discovering what our citizens feel should be done with regards to development within the two targeted areas. The meeting was initially scheduled for Monday, April 2, 2012 but had to be postponed due to the death of Mayor Baldwin and all the activity surrounding that event. Any such planning meeting will be vitally important to our historic preservation efforts since the two areas in question hold the most historic elements of our past within their boundaries. A “Schertz Historic Roots” fact sheet has been prepared discussing these elements and is available to anyone who would request such. Please come to the “Charrette” meeting when next scheduled and support preservation of our city’s history.
