2017 Spring Remembrances Newsletter 1 Remembrances Newsletter of the Schertz Historical Preservation Committee Spring Edition 2017 The first quarter of 2017 was a time for reflection, reporting and renewed action. Our committee reflection and reporting entailed submitting our annual written report to the Schertz City Council as to the completion of the various goals set for the Committee in our previous year’s report. The renewed action consisted on beginning to act upon the newly set 2017 goals. , Committee membership was significantly altered this past quarter by the untimely death of member Louis Segaloff and the relocation move of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Webb. On the plus side, the City Council approved Elizabeth Strong. for membership. The current member count leaves three vacancies open. We’re hopeful that the just completed City of Schertz Volunteer Open House event will result in new applicants. There were three important publications prepared for Committee consideration this quarter. First, is the Remembrances Special Edition Article 2017-2 titled: Schertz In The millennium Decade – Growth and Diversification. Second, is the consolidated research product that outlines the history of Schertz City Council activity during the fifty years from 1960 to 2010. Third, is the digital recording of Committee archives from inception to present day which will eventually be placed on a regional public library “BiblioTech – Biblioboard” access system. Publication of the latter data will allow access to information regarding the Committee’s work to all regional library users. A subcommittee has been formed to move the project forward. Our Committee outreach efforts have included involvement with the judging of student essay submissions to the Sons of the Texas Revolution. We’ve also participated in the planning for an upcoming Heritage Neighborhood clean-up campaign scheduled for May 6, 2017. We were also participants in the City Volunteer Open House event conducted on April 13, 2017. 2 The Committee established another satellite historic picture gallery at Samuel Clemens High School Library. The Clemens High School History Club organized and supervised the set-up of the gallery. The Schertz photo history book remains on sale at the Schertz Public Library, the Schertz Visitors Center and the City Hall Water Department at a price of $25. May is National Preservation Month. The Committee will be submitting two nominees for designation as Landmark Properties to the Schertz City Council sometime in May. The two properties are situated at 207 First Street (Grapevine Fellowship Church) and 2270 Trainer Hale Road. Both properties are among the oldest in our community. GO SPURS GO!
