The final quarter of 2016 was quite rewarding for the Committee in several
respects. There were achievements in each of our three 2016 goal areas.
In the historical designation area, there was research conducted, nomination
package completed/submitted, and Committee consideration/approval for
declaring 603 Main Street as a Schertz Landmark Property. Follow-on City
Council approval made the designation official.
The Committee’s publication efforts were aided by the City of Schertz Public
Affairs Office publication of a feature story on the historic Schertz Train Station
in the October issue of Schertz Magazine. Another historical feature article in the
magazine’s November issue described the work of a long-time Schertz volunteer
and retired U.S. Air Force Brigadier General Mary Marsh. Veterans Day
(marking the end of WW I) celebrations were reported upon in the December
issue of Schertz Magazine. The Magazine continued its monthly publication of the
Committee sponsored ‘Looking Back’ features. The Committee’s Remembrances
Special Edition 2017-1 article outlines the history of Schertz government during
the decade of the 1990s. The latter article will serve as input to a future 2017
proposed Committee publication outlining the history of Schertz City Council
activity from 1958 to 2010.
The Committee’s outreach efforts included participation in judging the co-
sponsored Schertz, Cibolo, Universal City Independent School District’s
(SCUCISD) art/essay contest and participation in the awards ceremony. There
was Committee participation in the City sponsored neighborhood clean-up
campaign. The Committee continued its involvement in the maintenance project
at the Old Town Heritage Neighborhood memorial site.

The honor of being named the City of Schertz Outstanding Volunteer of the Year 1966 was bestowed upon our Committee Treasurer Jim Webb at
the City’s Annual Community Volunteers Appreciation Dinner held on October
20, 2016. Jim served admirably as the Committee treasurer and did an
outstanding job promoting the Committee’s outreach programs.
The Committee undertook review of an application for award of a City of
Schertz Main Street matching grant for the restoration of the residence at
603 Main Street. This was our second grant consideration this year. The
Committee recommended approval of the grant application and the City Council
followed with its approval.
The Aviation Heights Heritage Neighborhood banners were installed
along neighborhood perimeter roads and serve to demark the area as a special
City Heritage Neighborhood. The significance of the neighborhood as relates to the
City’s early history is set forth in Remembrances Special Edition Article 2014-7.
The Schertz photo history book remains on sale at the Schertz Visitors Center, the Schertz Public Library and at City Hall (Water Dept.). Book sales during the Christmas holiday were brisk.
Committee officer selections for calendar year 2017 occurred and all of last year’s officers remain in their respective leadership roles. (Chairman: Dean Weirtz; Vice Chairman: Debbie Krause; Secretary: Lynn Foehrkolb; Treasurer: Jim Webb)
The Committee’s annual report to City Council was prepared and has been presented to the Council. Included in the report are the Committee’s 2017 goals and objectives.
