2019 Winter Remembrances Newsletter1 Remembrances Newsletter of the Schertz Historical Preservation Committee Winter Edition 2019 The 2018 Schertz, Cibolo, Universal City Independent School District (SCUCISD)/Schertz Historical Preservation Committee (SHPC) jointly sponsored Art & Essay Contest concluded during the month of October. Trophies for first, second and third place winners in grades K – 6th were awarded at the November 13, 2018 City Council meeting. Planning will soon begin for the 2019 competition. Remembrances Special Edition Articles 2019-1, “Historic Bells – Schertz (Comal Settlement) Contributors” was published and is attached to the newsletter. The 2019 inputs for the “Looking Back” feature published each month in the Schertz Magazine were submitted to the Schertz Public Affairs Department by member John Baker and have begun to be published as of the January magazine issue. The Committee’s Annual Report to City Council has been prepared and will be presented to Council early in February. The report outlines Committee commitments made in 2018, goals achieved and problems left unresolved. The Committee goals for 2019 are outlined in the report. Interested parties can request a copy of the Annual Report by replying to this email communication. The Committee has been notified that the historic video project undertaken by the consultant/marketing firm of “LOOKTHINKMAKE” out of Austin, Texas has been completed. The video records the historical development of the City of Schertz from its early beginnings until present. The project was sponsored by Crossvine Development Corp., which has its residential development project south of the City along Hwy 1518. A public unveiling of the video will occur at the Schertz Public Library on March 6th, 2019 as a part of the Schertz Heritage Open 2 House event. The event will begin at 6:00 p.m. and will include tours of the genealogy/history room, Schertz historic exhibits, the historic video unveiling and a panel presentation. All area citizens are invited to attend. The Schertz Public Library will close early on March 6th in preparation for the event. The Committee’s sister historical society of Riedisheim France has maintained communication with us, and reports having a busy year filled with historical activities. The Committee’s oral interview project continues to progress and should be completed in the next quarter. Committee officer selections have been completed for Calendar Year 2019 and include the Chairmanship to be occupied by Elizabeth Strong and Vice Chairman position to be occupied by Dean Weirtz. The soon to be opened Staybridge Suites Hotel at the intersection of Schertz Parkway and Interstate Highway 35 will incorporate historical photo depictions of early Schertz as a décor feature of its entryway and conference room. The Schertz City Council has provided the Committee with disposition instructions regarding its artifacts/property inventory being held by the Committee at various sites. Actions to implement those instructions will occur in the near future. The newly appointed Schertz City Manager (Dr. Mark Browne) met with Committee Chairman Dean Weirtz on January 10th for discussions regarding the Committee’s history, its goals/accomplishments and expectations for the future. Dr. Browne endorsed the Committee’s mission and pledged his support for the Committee. The Schertz history books (narrative and photo book) remain on sale at the Schertz Visitors Center, the Schertz Public Library and at City Hall (Water Dept.
