11-19 LAB Minutes CorrectedMINUTES: SCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MEETING DATE: 11/4/19 ATTENDANCE: Members Present: Chris Bryan, Beverly Clarke, Patti Dilworth, Patti Paulson, Margaret Riley, Letticia Sever, Ruth Tienor, Melissa Uhlhorn, Cindy Vigil, Joanne Ward Members Absent: Ken Bauer, Carol Cyr, Dawn Figueras, Julie Smith, Laura Wilson City Administration Members Present: None Visitors: Lizzi Bertoia, April Toman HEARING OF RESIDENTS: None CALL TO ORDER: Patti Dilworth called the meeting to order at 6:26pm. REGULAR AGENDA: 1. Minutes: Consideration and/or action regarding the approval of the minutes of the 10/7/2019 meeting. - Patti Paulson moved to accept the October 7, 2019 minutes as presented; Joanne Ward seconded the motion. - Motion carried and minutes accepted as presented. 2. Treasurer’s Report: Consideration and/or action regarding the approval of the September 2019 Treasurer’s Report. - Patti Paulson moved to accept the September 2019 Treasurer’s Report as presented; Joanne Ward seconded the motion. - Motion carried and treasurer’s report accepted as presented. 3. Librarian’s Report: Melissa Uhlhorn reported on the following items: September 2019 Library usage statistics: New card statistics were high because of outreach events at the local high schools. No other questions or comments. Library operations and other items of interest: The Library was closed on October 31 for staff training and an upgrade to the ILS. Both went well. Several students from Clemens HS will be helping with cleaning tasks in the Library and two students from Randolph will be helping with shelving tasks. All students are part of the schools’ respective job/life skills programs. Extreme Book Nerd Challenge 2019 will be ending soon—finish up the categories in order to be eligible for a t-shirt. Upcoming Library programs include: - Holidazzle—Lizzi and April will be giving away books at the Kris Kringle Market on 12/7/19 while supplies last - Handmade Holiday—gift-making program/crafts for ages 4 and up on 12/17/19 from 6:30-8pm - Noon Year’s Eve—a special celebration for anyone who can't stay awake until midnight on 12/31/19 from 11am – 12:15pm. Ongoing Library programs: - Sew Let it Be quilting bee; monthly on 2nd Tuesdays and 3rd Saturdays from 12- 3pm - Poetry Open Mic Night; monthly on 2nd Thursdays from 6:30-8pm - Bookends Afternoon Book Club; monthly on 2nd Thursdays at 1:30pm 4. Bookstore Report: The Committee reported on the following items: Bookstore operation No unusual operation news to report. Holiday bookstore closures—the store will be closed November 27-30 and December 23-January 4 Choice of dates for the next bag sale are February 21-22 or 28-29. February 28-29 was chosen. 5. Committee of Committees Advisory Board Update (if CCAB has met): No update DISCUSSION & POSSIBLE ACTION: 6. Reading Clubs—Discussion and possible action on funding for Winter Summer & Year Round reading clubs Lizzi Bertoia and April Toman presented a budget for upcoming reading clubs and asked for funding from the Library Advisory Board. The budget is as follows: $500 for Winter Reading Express winter program $2,000 for Extreme Book Nerd year round program $200 for Movin’ on Main and Holidazzle participation $6,300 for Imagine Your Story summer program $3,000 for temporary library staffing during summer months Ruth Tienor made a motion to fund the request, not to exceed $12,000; Patti Paulson seconded motion; motion carried 7. December Meeting—discussion and possible action on LAB December holiday meeting/gathering Patti Dilworth presented several catering options for the upcoming holiday gathering. A potato bar from HEB was the preferred option. Each attendee will pay $8.00 for the meal and LAB members will supply desserts and drinks. ANNOUNCEMENTS: 8. Items by the Library Board Members: Briefing and discussion on the following items. Correspondence received by the Secretary: None Other announcements by Library Board Members: Patti Dilworth received notice that Julie Smith will be resigning from the board immediately.
