2020 Winter Remembrances Newsletter1 Remembrances Newsletter of the Schertz Historical Preservation Committee Winter Edition 2020 For several years, the Committee has been a joint sponsor of the annual Schertz, Cibolo, Universal City Independent School District (SCUCISD)/ Schertz Historical Preservation Committee (SHPC) Student Art and Essay Contest. The 2019 contest theme was “Native American Presence in the Schertz, Cibolo and Universal City Independent School District Area.” Judging took place the week of October 28th and winners (1st, 2nd, & 3rd) for grade levels K thru 6th were presented awards at a December 3, 2019 City Council meeting. City Council members sit at the desks behind the winning group members. Remembrances Special Edition Article 2020-1 was published. (see attached) 2 The Cibolo Valley Community Museum Association (CVCMA) continues, under the leadership of SHPC officers Dean Weirtz and Elizabeth Strong, planning the development of an historic caboose railroad car static display feature situated at 1052 FM 78 (former Riedel Furniture Store parking lot). Also being planned is the placement of historic décor for the inside common areas of the soon to be renovated former furniture store building. Donations of historic artifacts and/or photos for use in either venue are being accepted. Volunteers who might like to assist with these projects can contact Dean Weirtz, telephone: 210-651-0394. The CVCMA has submitted a grant request to the Guadalupe Valley Electrical Cooperative (GVEC) for a GVEC Power Up Grant to help cover the cost of the train caboose restoration. The Committee continues its communication with our French partners in Reidisheim, France. Two communications were received in December 2019. At their January 7, 2020 meeting, the City Council approved the nominations of Howard Alperin and Will Soto to fill the Historical Preservation Committee seats vacated by former members Lou and Lynn Foehrkolb. Mr. Alperin has worked in sales, education, juvenile probation, and social work and is also a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. Mr. Soto has worked in operations management for several furniture retailers and undertaken numerous renovations as a painter- roofer and general contractor, including the renovation of the “Landmark” designated home at 603 Main Street in Schertz. We welcome both candidates to the Historical Preservation Committee. Committee officer nominations for calendar year 2020 were received and Voting resulted in the selection of Elizabeth Strong as Committee Chairman and Dean Weirtz as Vice Chairman. The Schertz history books (narrative and photo book) remain on sale at the Schertz Visitors Center, the Schertz Public Library, and at City Hall (Water Dept.).
