01-04-21 LAB MinutesSCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MEETING DATE: 1/4/2021 Members Present: Ken Bauer, Chris Bryan, Beverly Clarke, Carol Cyr, Patti Dilworth, Dawn Figueras, Patti Paulson, Margaret Riley, Letticia Sever, Ruth Tienor, Melissa Uhlhorn, Joanne Ward, Laura Wilson City Administration Members: none Visitors: none CALL TO ORDER: Patti Paulson called the meeting to order at 6:35 pm. HEARING OF RESIDENTS: none REGULAR AGENDA: 1. Minutes: Consideration and/or action regarding the approval of the minutes of the 11/2/2020 meeting. - Ruth Tienor moved to accept the 11/2/2020 minutes as presented. - Carol Cyr seconded the motion. - Motion carried. The 11/2/2020 minutes were accepted as presented. 2. Treasurer’s Report: Consideration and/or action regarding the approval of the 10/2020 Treasurer’s Report. - Patti Dilworth moved to accept the 10/2020 Treasurer’s Report as presented. - Joanne Ward seconded the motion. - The motion carried. The 10/2020 Treasurer’s Report was accepted as presented. 3. Librarian’s Report: Librarian will report on the following items. Library usage and statistics - The usage statistics are up, with about 1/3 of activities curbside for print and book pickup. - The hot spots are being used with about 30-40% checked out at a time. Library operation and other items of interest - The library took part in the “Candy Cruise” held in October, where there were stations across the city for drive by trick or treating. It was a very successful program. - Information packets were presented to City Council recapping fiscal year 2019-2020 and the Library steps taken during Covid. Copies were present to the board. - The grant money received from the CARES act for Covid is being used in the following ways. - Round 1 funds were spent on equipment and the reimbursement has been received. - Round 2 funds were spent on programs such as A-Z databases, Niche Academy education, Creativebug, etc. The reimbursement request has been submitted. - Round 3 funds are for additional e-books, check out modules that works with current software. - All programs are still virtual. More children than adults are using these. Programs include poetry in pjs, take and make, and bring your own book. - Book Nerd 2021 reading challenge sign up will begin in January. Lists for the 2020 challenge are due early February. - There have been limited complaints and most people are accepting of changes including mask wearers. Self-checkout is a big hit. - There are not planned changes on operations yet, but changes could be made based on Covid numbers. - There have been no real problems with high school students who have behaved well. - Attendance at the Schertz library is on par with New Braunfels. Marion is building a new library. This new library is not expected to have a big impact on money received by Schertz library from the county as it is meted out by population. 4. Bookstore Report: Committee reported on the following items: General Operation: - There is no re-opening scheduled at this time. - Some books are being sold in the library. For the few days this was done in November, sales were about $27. For December, sales were about $378. Different ideas about book sales continue to be discussed. - Donations are being accepted Thursdays from 1-3 in the bookstore. Sorting takes place on Tuesday which covers the necessary book quarantine time. - Discussions about how to have a book sale are being discussed including an outdoor sale. - Joanne Ward will be retiring as bookstore manager and so a new manager will be needed in time to get training done. 5. Committee of Committees Advisory Board Update (if CCAB has met): - No meetings have occurred. DISCUSSION & POSSIBLE ACTION: I. LAB responsibilities – run the bookstore and advocate to the community for the library. - The Library has about 4-5 community events per year (when allowed under protocol for Covid). The LAB is being asked to help work these community events which would be a few hours on Saturdays. The library will keep LAB advised of events. - LAB members are requested to help cover the shifts when it reopens and also to help with book sales. - To show support for Library staff, it would be very supportive to introduce themselves and get to know staff.
