05-03-21 LAB MinutesSCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MEETING DATE: 5/3/21 Members Present Chris Bryan, Beverly Clarke, Carol Cyr, Patti Dilworth, Dawn Figueras, Margaret Riley, Letticia Sever, Ruth Tienor, Melissa Uhlhorn, Joanne Ward, Laura Wilson City Administration Members: Brian James Visitors: None CALL TO ORDER: Dawn Figueras called the meeting to order at 6:30. HEARING OF RESIDENTS: None REGULAR AGENDA: 1. Minutes: Consideration and/or action regarding the approval of the minutes of the 4/5/2021 meeting. - Joanne Ward moved to accept the 4/5/2021 minutes as presented. - Carol Cyr seconded the motion. - Motion carried. The 4/5/2021 minutes were accepted as presented. Or with corrections. 2. Treasurer’s Report: Consideration and/or action regarding the approval of the 3/2021 Treasurer’s Report. - The February Treasurer’s Report was changed to reflect sales tax paid of $13. - Ruth Tienor moved to accept the 3/2021 Treasurer’s Report as presented. - Letticia Sever seconded the motion. - The motion carried. The 3/2021 Treasurer’s Report was accepted as presented. 3. Librarian’s Report: Librarian will report on the following items. Library usage and statistics - Circulation and volunteer hours were up. - Programming was still virtual only. - Food vendors continue although there is a limit of 2 unless there is an event. The usual vendor is an ice cream/fruit drink truck. - Spring break was very busy. Library operation and other items of interest - There will be an article in the Schertz June magazine highlighting the various programs like take & make, hot spots, adult poetry, BYOB reading, etc. It will also talk about resources like the various electronic resources. - The library will partner with Overdrive – an eBook app – to do eBook training. - Children’s programs are on hold until the summer. - One staff member is moving and another retiring, so the library will be looking to fill these spots. Lizzie begins maternity leave in July. - The library under city guidance is moving forward with the return to “normal” plan post Covid. Temperature checks and masks will not be required. Staff will continue to wear masks. Books are no longer being quarantined. Expanding operation hours is being considered. Study rooms are opening soon. - Virtual programs will probably continue through the summer. Outdoor children’s programs with pre-registration are being considered. - ELL programs will begin onsite with social distancing. - Computer stations have been added. 2 pods are distanced. 3 pods have added computers available. Gaming computers will be available soon in children’s section. - Meeting rooms are still closed and reopening one is being considered. - Sunday hours and more evening hours are being considered. Hours open will be weighed against how strong demand for curbside is. - Most staff is vaccinated. - Flexibility of operations will continue. - 2021 extreme book nerd is open. The summer reading program is “Tails and Tales” and LAB received shirts for the program. 4. Bookstore Report: Committee reported on the following items: General Operation: - The bookstore will be able to establish their own covid requirements based on comfort level of volunteers – i.e. masks, number of customers, etc. - The bookstore is reopened on a limited basis. Many regulars came and things went well. The first day earned $70. The next day – Saturday – earned $140. Some customers did have a short wait outside to keep the numbers manageable. - Discussions about whether to keep tables with available items in library will continue based on numbers. - The store will add a 3rd day and be open Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Joann will decide if further days should be added. - Discussions were had about a big book sale and more discussions will be held. One idea is to have one in July. - Discussions about vintage book sales and how to handle continued. - Joann is looking to retire as manager. Beverly may be interested if she has a partner. - San Marcos is redoing their library and a shelf unit may be available for the bookstore. 5. Committee of Committees Advisory Board Update (if CCAB has met): No meeting was held. DISCUSSION & POSSIBLE ACTION: - LAB involvement and engagement discussions will continue. - Review of vintage book sales to continue. - April and Katrina will work together to put together training for customer service, cash register usage, etc. Hopefully, this will be ready in a few months.
