2021 Fall Remembrances Newsletter1 Remembrances Newsletter of the Schertz Historical Preservation Committee Fall Edition 2021 There has been a continuing renewal/preservation effort underway since April 2017 called the Main Street Renewal Project under the leadership of City Councilman Mark Davis. Mark is the City Council’s subcommittee chairman leading the project. Under Mark’s leadership and City staff’s assist, a plan has been developed for enhancement of Main Street area that will hopefully bring new life to Main Street. Some business and private property owners along Main Street have benefited from a two-pronged grant program meant to stimulate renewal of properties along Main Street and investment in new development. As you travel down Main Street notice the sidewalk improvements, parking lot expansions, new business openings and historic banners now in place. More is yet to appear in the form of pedestrian rest area seating, street repairs/resurfacing, statuary (historic) elements and area entry markers. Committee representation as “stakeholders” in the subcommittee project continued with attendance at September and October meetings. The Schertz Historical Preservation Committee met in a special (out of scheduled) session of September 16, 2021 to consider status of several Committee projects and to approve planning/funding for two Committee projects, i.e., classic car show (Daniel Bourgeois, Peter Perez, Jr., Jesse Gonzalez, and Rosalyn Wise) and Time Capsule development (Patricia Barnes, Judith Williams, Rosalyn Wise & Dean Weirtz). The car show occurred on October 16, 2021, at Pickrell Park and was a great success. During August and September 2021, restoration of banners positioned at the Old Schertz Heritage Neighborhood south of Highway FM 78 at First Street was undertaken by a historic preservation subcommittee (Dean Weirtz, Jackie Hollis & Miguel Vasquez). This was a long overdue project and provides preservation of historic reminders of the importance of the City’s oldest Heritage neighborhood. 2 Old Schertz Heritage Neighborhood Restored Banners Another on-going preservation project includes establishment of a “time capsule” featuring historic evolution of events (national & local) and area landscapes. The capsule will be opened on the 75th anniversary of the City’s incorporation that occurs in the year 2032. The public is invited to contribute items to the capsule. The Fall Remembrances Special Edition Articles 2021-4 and 2021-5 have been published and are appended as attachments to the newsletter. Installments of Remembrances 2020-5, Part II, continues with an expected completion date of January 2022. The Committee participated in the Schertz/Cibolo/Selma Chamber of Commerce Non-Profit Luncheon event in August 2021. The event allowed the Committee representatives to familiarize business leaders with the mission and accomplishments of the Committee. The Hansmann family farm was designated as a Schertz Landmark Property on August 10, 2021, and a commemorative plaque and a certificate of award were presented to the Hansmann family. A feature article regarding our community’s Landmark Property designation program appears in the November issue of Schertz Magazine pages 34-35. ` 3 Another local business may soon join others in the display of Schertz City history exhibits. The First United Bank at 4917 FM 3009 is in the midst of expanding its bank facility and is collecting Schertz historic photo materials supplied by the Cibolo Valley Community Museum Association for eventual production of several historical murals to be placed on one or more of the interior walls of the bank. A grand opening of the bank’s new space expansion will occur soon, so look for that event. Committee member Judith Williams has stepped forward to offer her services as a Schertz City Council member. Her advertising signage is seen throughout the community (Orange & black signage). Good luck Judith.
