August 4, 2021 Animal Advisory Committee MeetingSCHERTZ ANIMAL CARE ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES WEDNESDAY AUGUST 4,2021 6:OOPM The Animal Care Advisory Committee of the City of Schertz, Texas held a regular meeting on August 4, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. at Schertz Animal Shelter, 800 Community Circle, Schertz, Texas. The following members were present: Committee Members Present: Brooke Knowlton, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Rosemary Scott, City Council Liaison Marc Bane, Assistant Chief of Police, Chair Allison Heyward, City Council Liaison Back -up Megan Lagunas, Shelter Manager Stephanie Ramirez, Shelter Staff Members not present: Michelle Helgren, Under Savannah's Wings Lisa Connolly, Homes for Pets Staff Present: Charles Kelm, Assistant City Manager CALL TO ORDER AT: 6:00 pm by Assistant Chief Bane ROLL CALL: See Committee Members Present HEARING OF RESIDENTS: No residents present. 1. Minutes: Consideration and/or action regarding the approval of the minutes of the regular meeting of August 4, 2021. A motion was made by Council Woman Scott to approve the minutes of May 5, 2021. Council Woman Heyward seconded the motion. Motion passed. Vote was unanimous. 2. Staffing • 1 -Full -Time Kennel Tech position opening • 2 Full -Time Animal Services Officer g. Customer Interactions • No customer complaints since last update • Community concerns, Wildlife in yard, dead animals on roadway, animal welfare, stray cats, dog bites, dogs at large and barking dogs. h. Media • The shelter continues to utilize social media and the shelter website to advertise animals new to the shelter. • We continue to utilize social media to advertise our community adoption events and search for animal fosters. • The shelter continues to utilize the "Pet Finder" for all adoptable animals at the shelter. 4. Information on New Adoption Partner — Manager Lagunas went over our new adopting partner Petsmart. They took 14 cats/kittens. Petsmart also works with SCAT, Stray Cat Adoptions of Texas and they take a lot of adult cats and kittens as well. 5. AC Project Update —Assistant Chief Bane filled in everyone regarding the AC project as work will begin the first week of September with the thought of starting external work in the next two weeks. Temporary trailer outside for staff and a portable trailer for the cats. 6. Fencing Project Update — Assistant Chief Bane talked about the fencing project whereas the area in the back would have enclosure which would provide security fence for the officers, trucks, trailers and equipment out back with a sliding gate and only employees would have access. Future use would also give opportunity to create extra dog runs and be ready for future growth. Right now the scope has been written and working with purchasing and building services and working on getting other two quotes. 7. New Training Initiatives — Manager Lagunas explained that there is a final FTO program for animal services officers and currently working on the kennel technician FTO program as well. In a few weeks we will be hosting Certified Euthanasia Class with open registration for other shelters. 8. PIMA Medical Institute Agreement — Manger Lagunas went over the student program with PIMA. This is where we send over animals weekly for students get to learn vaccinations, x -rays, dental cleaning, etc. It is extremely beneficial to us and saves funds from these service that we normally pay our vet offices for. 9. Announcements by the Assistant City Manager: Mr. Kelm stated he is super excited about the AC project and thanked shelter staff for doing a tremendous job. 10. Announcements by Committee Members: Jacki Marbach announced the next meeting dates of August 4, 2421 and first week in November. Council Woman Heyward let Manager Lagunas know what a good job she is doing and commended the social media effort. Council Woman Scott also thanked Manager Lagunas and staff for the great job. Dr. Brooke Knowlton talked about heat strokes while being out with your animals with the heat this year and stated that this year's snake season has not been what it normally is. She is also excited to do some training with some of animal services officers. 12. Requests by Committee Members for items be placed on a future Animal Care Advisory Committee Agenda: None 13.
