Membership renewal has been the focus of attention for the Committee during
the first calendar quarter of 2022. Five member positions were vacated during
the period from January to April. The military assignment of the Committee
Chairman will create another membership vacancy which hopefully will be filled
during nomination to the post at the April 28, 2022 meeting.
The time capsule project has formulated its listing of items for inclusion. In
general, the items selected for placement consist of artifacts as well as social,
political, cultural and economic phenomena being experienced in our society as
of 2020/2022. The capsule will be stored in a secured facility until opened
during the City of Schertz’ 75th Anniversary in the year 2034. If anyone wishes to
contribute an item to the capsule, please contact Dean Weirtz at tel. #210-651-

The Committee evaluated its by-laws and made amendments as needed. The last
review of the by-laws was undertaken in January 2020. Only minor substantive
changes were made along with a few language adjustments.
There is interest in revisiting the possibility of selecting the property at 800 Fm
3009 as a Landmark Property. The residence at that address is the former home
of the Dietz family who were among the earliest settlers of the Schertz area. The
Dietz home still stands and was recently sold to an individual currently
undertaking a repurposing of the home to a lounge/social club.
Another project discussed among committee members is the restoration of the
Schertz-Cibolo Historic Cemetery. Dr. Miguel Vasquez is the President of the
Cemetery Restoration Association and has raised the idea of development of a
historic trail connecting two or three of Schertz’ historic cemeteries.

The Committee pursued two historic preservation/restoration projects during the
first quarter of the year. First was the redesign/restoration of the landscape
surrounding the marker situated at the entrance to the old town heritage
neighborhood (First St. & Lee St.). This project was carried out by a contractor
hired by the City’s Parks and Recreation Department. The second project
consisted of repainting the west wall of the Jodi Head Lopez Law Firm building
on FM 78 which frames the historic “Welcome to Schertz” mural. Still on going is
the restoration work on the former historic village general store at 6565 FM 482
(Kneupper General Store) and the adjacent Kneupper home at the same site.
Landscape enhancement at the historic Kramer House (Chamber of Commerce

The Committee participated in a joint Main Street Renewal City Council
subcommittee meeting on April 19, 2022 that held discussions with the design
contractor for the placement of prospective markers, fixtures, lighting, etc. for
placement on Main Street (see examples offered below). Historic banners,
sidewalk repairs, parking lot additions and other initiatives have been underway
or are planned.
