2022 Winter Remembrances Newsletter1 Remembrances Newsletter of the Schertz Historical Preservation Committee Winter Edition 2022 As one year ends and another begins, the Schertz Historical Preservation Committee anticipates new adventures in the pursuit of Schertz historical preservation causes. Last year’s accomplishments have been recorded in the Committee’s Annual Report to City Council. As previously announced, the Committee has welcomed several new members as of mid-year 2021 and each has stepped forward to contribute time and talents towards accomplishment of the Committee’s mission. We’re proud of the quality of our membership (three PHD degree holders and lots of valued professional experienced members). Publication efforts have focused on several different projects to include four articles published in Schertz Magazine during the quarter focusing on the “Looking Back” monthly feature, the Committee’s Landmark Property/Heritage Neighborhood projects, the Committee sponsored classic car show, and the Committee’s Time Capsule project. Collaboration with the Cibolo Valley Community Museum Association (CVCMA) and the Cibolo Historic Society produced an essay regarding mid-century decade (1950s) circumstance in Schertz and Cibolo (Cibolo Valley) (see attached). In the meantime, work continued on the writing of an historical accounting of the COVID-19 pandemic from the national, State of Texas, Guadalupe County, and Schertz city perspectives. Discussions were held in November with representatives of First United Bank at 4917 FM 3009 and CVCMA for the placement of photo images of early Schertz on wall space within the bank’s newly built addition. The grand opening of the new section of the bank should occur in the early new year. Please call the bank (Summer Robledo-Moreno 210-619-2614) and ask to be included in its invitation list for the grand opening of the new bank addition. Committee member Judith Williams organized a Christmas Gala dinner for her fellow committee members held at Romano’s Macaroni Grill in Selma (Forum Center) on December 3rd . The event was a terrific welcome to the beginning of 2 the Christmas season. Lots of laughs, gifts, and good cheer were highlights of the evening. We hope all of you had similar enjoyable events to attend over the holiday period. The Committee sponsored car show held on Saturday, October 16th , was the big project of the fourth quarter. The event was held at Pickrell Park and involved a competitive showing of over 65 vehicles for award of 56 different trophies. Congratulations to all the committee members who worked hard to make the car show happen and who assured its success by their participation.
