10-03-22 LAB MinutesSCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MEETING DATE:10/3/2022 Members Present: Ken Bauer, Amy Bearce, Chris Bryan, Beverly Clarke, Patti Dilworth, Linda Duvall, Dawn Figueras, Patti Paulson, Margaret Riley, Letticia Sever, Ruth Tienor, Melissa Uhlhorn, Joanne Ward, Laura Wilson City Administration/Council Members: None Visitors: None CALL TO ORDER: Patti Paulson called the meeting to order at 6:28 pm. HEARING OF RESIDENTS: None REGULAR AGENDA: 1. Minutes: Consideration and/or action regarding the approval of the minutes of the 911212022 meeting. - Joanne Ward moved to accept the 9/12/2022 minutes as presented. - The motion carried. The 10/3/2022 minutes were accepted as presented. 2. Treasurer's Report: Consideration and/or action regarding the approval of the 812022 Treasurer's Report. Margaret Riley moved to accept the 8/2022 Treasurer's Report as presented. Patti Dilworth seconded the motion. The motion carried. The 8/2022 Treasurer's Report was accepted as presented. 3. Library Programming: Discussion and possible action on funding for Winter, Summer, and Year Round reading clubs and other library programming. - Note: This is item 5 on the agenda but was moved earlier in meeting. - Lizzie Bertoia presented the LAB proposed programming budget for 2022-2023. Winter Reading Challenge - $500 Book Nerd Challenge - $2200 Special Events - $1800 Summer Reading - adult $2000 Children $3000 Summer Staff 2500 Total $12,000 - The summer program will be titled "All Together Now" and will focus on kindness, friendship, and unity. - Ruth Tienor moved to accept the budget as presented. Dawn Figueras seconded the motion. The motion carried. The budget was accepted as presented. 4. Librarian's Report: Librarian will report on the following items. Librarymsage and statistics - Youth programs are not held in August since school starts. - Circulation numbers are good. The number of cardholders is down due to a purge of cards that had not been used in 3 years. Library operation and other items of interest - The Schertz Magazine format will change in November. The library will have 1 page for recurring programing. Additional ads will be 1/4 or Y2 page for special events, etc. - Toward the end of November through December, a "Holiday Magic" gift wrap station will be in the front of the library. - In November, a teen book bundle program will begin with varied topics/themes. - April Toman is very excited about the new audio book program and has begun working on getting started. - The Qui Gong program is ending. A trial run of the Total Body Strength program (chair based) will begin 11/7 at 10:30 am. - A "Building on Retirement" program will be held 11/17 at 5:30 pm. - In person tutoring has begun with a focus on grades 3-8. This is a drop -in program. Brain Fuse online tutoring is open to all age levels. - Some staff with the library attended emergency operations training. In the event of an emergency, the plan is for the library to work on handling donations. - Library staff attended a National Alliance for Mental Health workshop. 5. Bookstore Report: Committee reported on the following items: General Operation: - Beverly Clarke thanked the library and city staff and volunteers who helped with the book sale. Melissa Uhlhorn shared that the library received positive feedback for the book sale. - The book sale generated $1496.32, while during the same days the book store generated $425. - The next book sale will be 1/13 and 1/14 with set up on 1/12. - The book store will be rotating through holiday books and will add a section for "stocking stuffers." - The book store will be closed for Thanksgiving from 11/21 to 11/27 and for Christmas from 12/19 to 1/2. DISCUSSION & POSSIBLE ACTION: 1. Continuation of the SOAR analysis. A. Aspirations. Center for community. - Place for personal growth and enrichment B. Mission and vision statements Both statements are being reviewed and amended. A discussion was held on ideas for these statements with a focus on suggested key words, i.e. community, enrichment, inspire, inform, imagine, etc. Melissa Uhlhorn will continue to review and amend the statements with library staff and will present the results at a future date.
