LAB 11-02-2006 SCHERTZ PUBLIC LffiRARY ADVISORY BOARD (l.AB) MINUTES The LAB met on November 6, 2006 with the following members present: Ruth Tienor Barbara Ricks Laura Wilson Simone Bailcy Neota Brady Mary McAllister Melissa Uhlhorn Gail Douglas Guests: Mr. Brockman Shad Shafie oJ. Minutes: Minutes for the ~ meeting were presented. Barbara moved we accept the minutes as corrected. On Hermann Sons item under the Librarians' Report, strike out the words ''part of' and in New Business Tony Vanderman's name should read Tony.) Neota seconded. Motion passed. Treasurer's Report: Barbara presented the report. Due to a sales tax (:rror, amended reports for July and August were also presented. Mary moved to approve and Laura seconded. Motion passed. Citizen Comments: Mr. Brockman asked if the LAB meeting date is in the Schertz Tales. Melissa said that it is included on the city calendar schedule. Librarians' Reports: . The stats were as follows: circulation - 24,185 patrons - 14,624 (6% increase over Ia.st October) story time - 408 computer usage - 2108 · Nicki has been working on the Winter Reading program and it should be ready by thl~ end of December. · The Book Mark contest is underway. Information may be obt2lined from the library or the web site. · Teen Read Week was held in mid October. Eight pizza restaUl'ants said they would participate in the Pizza Taste Off. However, only 2 delivered pizzas. · No one attended the Napoleon Dynamite Party for the Teen Read group on October 31 st. · Trunk or Treat was a great success. Approximately 500 childrt::n attended. · Nicki is continuing to work on the Web page. · Jennifer Heine, Cibolo author, will be reading her book at the l:ibrary in November. · Melissa and Nicki have contacted the Schertz Youth Commission for suggestions as to name and furnishings of the teen area in the new library. · The library has a new collection of Graphic Novels for kids. Young adults may also enjoy some of the novels. Most of the novels are fiction. . · Melissa presented a storytelling program at the Schertz Methodist Diamond Club. · Hermann Sons monies should be received soon. · A part-time clerk position has been advertised. · There was an AALS collection meeting in October. Discussions were on how the systems moneys are split and how there may be changes in funding. · A Hill COWltry geographic meeting will be held November 9th. Committee Reports: none Old Business: · New library update - Melissa has been working on the request fi)r architect qualifications for the new library building. Mr. Carpenter, city council member, sent word requesting that the LAB submit a statement to the city council concerning the location of the new library . · Library float for December parade - The theme of the float will be based on the book. The Mitten. There will be a work day on November 17m at 9:30 at the Public Works building. · Update of bylaws - Changes to the by-laws were presented. After review and discus:,ion, Simone moved that we accept the revised by-laws. Neota seconded. Motion passed. · Other-Christmas items will be on sale in the Used Bookstore on November 15th. Publicity of the sale will be signs in the library, a notice on the Web page, and possibl.y a notice on the water bill. · Other - The Spectrum Club will accept old cell phones to be donated to the Battered Women's Shelter. New Business: · Expiration of board member terms - Barbara's, Neota's, Simone's, and Carl's tenus expire at the end of2oo6. Those desiring another term should :fiU out the city volunteer application. Barbara stated that she would not be seeking another tenn. John Correu will be contacted as he has been designated an ex-officio member 3S per motion regarding military reserve members. Melissa will check with City Hall fin applications. · Library staff workshop and circulation policies -- November 14th the library will be closed as the staff will be attending a workshop. In the mornin.g,. a trainer from HousIl:on will address Customer Service. The remainder of the day will bt: spent discussing circulation policies. Board members are invited to attend the afternoon session. · Other - Margaret, Mary, and Ruth were appointed to review the bookstore policy and bring the updated policy to a future meeting. Mary made the motion to adjourn. Simone seconded. Motion carried.
