LAB 12-04-2006 SCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD (LAB) MINUTES The LAB met on December 4, 2006 with the following members present: Ruth Tienor Patti Lovelady Margaret Riley Barbara Ricks Mary McAllister Neota Brady Simone Bailey Laura Wilson John Correu Melissa Uhlhorn Nicki Stohr Gail Douglas Michael Carpenter Minutes: Minutes for the November meeting were presented. Simone moved to accept the minutes with the following addition to the Hermann Sons item in the Librarian's report: "Thanks to Mr. Brockman's generous donation, Hermann Sons met their library fund raiser goal". Margaret seconded. Motion passed. Treasurer's Report: Barbara has not received a report from the city at this time. November bookstore sales totaled $609.07. There is $22,863.60 in the investment account. Citizen Comments: none Librarians' Reports: . The stats were as follows: circulation - 22,334 patrons - 12,875 computer usage - 1938 story time - 417 on-line renewals -- 1290 · Winter Reading program registration begins December 29. During the winter program, children's hand and foot prints will be made into a quilt. Plans are to sell the quilt in the Book Store. · Jordan Intermediate students made window clings for the juvenile section. . Jennifer Heine, Cibolo author, read her book titled "All Your Tomorrows" at storytime in November. · Upcoming programs for January include Creepy, Slimy Science and Ooey, Goey Night. February programs will be Chocolate Spiders and Edible Fire. · The Schertz Youth Commission will make suggestions as to room name and furnishings ofthe teen area in the new library. · Plans for the summer reading program are underway. An ice cream social is planned for the "kick-off' activity. . The staff has been working on CEUs. . The Workshop and Staff meeting on November 14th was beneficial. · Interested architectural firms have been submitting qualification information. This information is due December 22. Interviews will be held in January. . Interviews for a part-time clerk position will begin soon. · Hermann Sons presented $1050 to the library at their awards dinner. . Margaret and Melissa attended the November 9th AALS meeting. Discussion was on the changing role of AALS and how they will serve libraries. The state library system will be changing the way they fund libraries. Emphasis will be on programs not books. · The Live Homework program is being used. It is funded by AALS through Sept. 2007. Committee Reports: Bookstore Policy will be updated in the future. Old Business: · New library building project - );> Mr. Carpenter attended a GVEC Leadership Conference and reported that a group of Juniors from Clemens High School will be working on a project to raise funds for furniture, rugs, etc. for the Early Reader Section ofthe new library. );> The Brownsville City Librarian has extended an invitation to the LAB to visit and share Brownsville's experience in building a new library. · Expiration of board member terms - Simone Bailey, Neota Brady, Carl Douglas, and John Correu will be recommended to the December 12th city council workshop for appointment to a two year term on the Library Advisory Board. · By-laws - the update will be emailed to LAB members. New Business: · LAB officers for upcoming year - Slate of officers is as follows: Chairman - Ruth Tienor Vice-Chairman - Patty Lovelady Secretary - Mary McAllister Treasurer - Laura Willson Simone moved to approve the slate of officers. Neota seconded. Motion passed. · Library Bookmark contest -- Eighty-two entries were received. From the six finalists, a winner was selected. · Dinosaur World exhibit - A proposal for the showing has been received from Dinosaur George. This exhibit will begin on January 15th and show for 6 days in the Civic Center. · The LAB presented Barbara with a thank-you note and pin for her years of service on the board. · Melissa presented the board members with volunteer bags and pins for their service to the library. Simone made the motion to adjourn. Laura seconded. Motion carried. All three members are interested in serving another two-year term. Their applications are attached. The Schertz Library Advisory Board has voted to recommend these members to City Council for reappointment. N eota Brady Simone Bailey Carl Douglas John Correau (application attached) has applied to serve as well. He had served previously on the Library Board, but his term was interrupted when he was called to active duty. Now that he has returned, he would like to fill a place that will be vacated J an 1,2007 when Barbara Ricks retires from service as a board member.
