LAB 02-05-2007 SCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD (LAB) MINUTES The LAB met on February 5, 2007 with the following members present: Ruth Tienor Patti Lovelady Margaret Riley Laura Wilson Carl Douglas Neota Brady John Correu Mary McAllister Melissa Uhlhorn Nicki Stohr Gail Douglas Michael Carpenter Guests: Mr. Brockman Minutes: Minutes for the January meeting were presented. Under Librarians' Reports the fourth item should read "...will do the Wee Sit program" not "...Tiny Tots program". Patti moved to accept the corrected minutes and Neota seconded. Motion passed. Treasurer's Report: Laura presented the report. Melissa asked ifthere was a cap on the cash account or if a certain amount was indicated before money was transferred to the investment account. There is no cap as it depends upon projected expenditures during certain times of the year. Questions were raised as to how designated funds/donations for the new library are coded. Melissa will speak with Juan Santoya. Margaret moved to accept the report and Carl seconded. Motion passed. Citizen Comments: Mr. Brockman asked how often the library marquee is updated. The cold weather has delayed the change this month. Librarians' Reports: . The stats were as follows: circulation - 23,868 patrons -13,553 computer usage - 2,164 new cards -- 188 story time - 291 directional/reference information questions - 1108 Even though the library was closed for 2 Y2 days due to bad weather, stats for the month are up 16% over January 2006. · Winter Reading Club attendance has been down this year, only 55 participants. Programs included Creepy Sloppy Science, Blubber, Levitating Spiders, Yuk Night, and Voting Books Off the Island. · A picture of a stuffed dog at the library was entered in the contest "Where in the World is the Dog?". We received 2 free books from Creative Publishing. · Sail Away with Books is the theme for the summer reading program. Registration can be done on line. . Teen Tech week is March 4-10. · Wal-Mart has donated $1000 for programming. · Robert Wilkens donated $200 for audio books. · A part-time shelver will be transferring to another position in the city. That will leave a part-time opening at the library. . Three thousand one hundred twenty-five people attended the Dinosaur Exhibit. · Melissa attended an Emergency Preparedness Workshop in San Antonio. Situations in a library setting were discussed. (e.g. drying books) Community Services Director's Report: none Council Liaison's Report: Land had been purchased for the new library. Committee Reports: none Old Business: . New library building project- ~ The Kell Munoz architectural firm has been chosen. New Business: · The Bookstore Policy draft was discussed. With minor changes, Carl moved to accept the policy. John seconded. Motion passed. Mary will e-mail copies to board members. · Nicki brought the quilt that was made during the Winter Reading Club. It was discussed as to what should be done with the quilt. For the present, it will be hung in the children's area of the library. Margaret made the motion to adjourn. Carl seconded. Motion carried.
