LAB 05-07-2007 SCHERTZ PUBLIC LffiRARY ADVISORY BOARD (LAB) MINUTES The LAB met on May 7, 2007 with the following members present: Ruth Tienor Margaret Riley Laura Wilson Carl Douglas Neota Brady Mary McAllister Melissa Uhlhorn Gail Douglas Guest: Bob Brockman Minutes: Minutes for the April meeting were presented. Carl moved to approve and Margaret seconded. Motion passed. Treasurer's Report: Laura presented the March report. She also reported that some donations for the summer reading program have been received. Margaret moved to approve and Neota seconded. Motion passed. Citizen Comments: Mr. Brockman expressed concern about the library parking lot lights. Gail reported that the lights will be replaced. Librarians' Reports: · Stats were as follows: circulation - 22,079 patrons - 13,875 computer usage - 1,768 info questions - 807 story time - 434 cards issued -- 287 (cards are being purged -- total cards 19,548) · Barbara Samuelson, part-time processing clerk, is resigning. · Melissa and Nicki attended the TLA Conference and received CEUs for workshops. · The summer reading club will kick-off with an ice cream social and outdoor movie on June 1 st. Blue Bell is donating ice cream and Word of Life Fellowship is donating the toppings. This will be the only outdoor movie this year. · This is the last year to receive money for collection development from AALS. The $2000 received will be used for children and adult audio books and children's print books. · Nicki continues to receive donations (Ski Ranch, Action Park, Laser Quest, Verizon, Planetarium, Savings Bonds, Institute of Texas Cultures, Sonic) for the summer reading program. Most ofthe items will be placed in drawings. For every 200 minutes of reading, the child will earn an entry. Most fast food coupons will go into the registration packets. · Read Offthe Fine will be the last week in May. Those under 18 will be able to earn a penny a minute towards the fine by reading to a book buddy in the library. Community Services Director's Report: · Lynn Sherr was the featured speaker at TLA. Gail served as a hostess. · A number of high school students have volunteered for the teen program. Council Liaison's Report: · Councilman David Scagliola represented Councilman Carpenter at meeting. Committee Reports: none Update on new library building project · Both the library and YMCA are planned for the same property. · Melissa and Gail are currently working with the architects on the interior space. Discussion on library bookstore furnishings · Circular racks, magazine racks, open book shelves, sink, sorting area wi table or countertop, cash register, and area for new merchandise (e.g. book bags, book marks, etc.) were some of the suggestions for consideration. Discussion of 4th of July library parade float · The Summer Reading Club theme, "Sail Away With Books", will be used for the float. A pirate ship will be built. · A work day will be scheduled at the next meeting. Items by Library Board members · Playscape concerns - The playscape is inspected regularly and is repaired as needed. · The city web site lists the purpose of the LAB.
