LAB 09-10-2007 SCHERTZ PUBLIC LffiRARY ADVISORY BOARD (LAB) MINUTES The LAB met on September 10, 2007 with the following members present: Ruth Tienor Patti Lovelady Laura Wilson Neota Brady Margaret Riley Simone Bailey Mary McAllister Nicki Stohr Melissa Uhlhorn Gail Douglas Michael Carpenter Guest: Bob Brockman Minutes: Margaret moved to accept the minutes as corrected, and Laura seconded. Motion carried. Treasurer's Report: Mary moved to approve the report, and Margaret seconded. Motion carried. Citizen Comments: Mr. Brockman commented that the article in the Schertz Tales about the new library was good and also that he was glad to see the lights in the library parking lot were working. He asked about the recycling project. Melissa reported that the response has been great. A line item may be added for the proceeds. Librarians' Reports: . Stats were as follows: circulation - 26,064 patrons - 16,010 computer usage - 2,625 info questions - 823 story time presentation by GVEC - 30 (August has been a program planning month.) · Vera Montgomery, library clerk, passed away. Vera was the library's first paid clerk. She had been employed for nearly 22 years and before that she was a library volunteer. · The new library phone number (619-1700) is in operation. The old number should roll over to the new number. · Nicki is working on getting the Rosetta Stone program on line. It is an on-line language tutoring program. There are lessons in 9 languages. · Tutoring.com is the on-line tutoring program. · Soon patrons will be able to go on line, use their card, and download information from the ILS (integrated library system). · At the AALS fall meeting, Melissa spoke with many library system vendors. · Nicki reported that 51 children preregistered for the Lego Design Contest. Of those, thirty-five participated. In the future, there will be Lego quick builds. These will be held during Christmas, Thanksgiving or Spring Break holidays. · We now have the following story times available: Wee Sit, Toddler Time, After School, and Teens and Tweens. On October 16th the Teens and Tweens will have the annual Pizza Taste-Off. . The winter reading club is scheduled for January 2nd to February 14th. It will also be available for adults. Nicki would like suggestions for gift basket ideas (e.g. pet, movie). Two hundred minutes of reading qualifies for an entry into the drawing. · The children have asked for another gaming lock-in at the library. Community Services Director's Report: · Gail and the new Parks and Recreation Director have been involved in meetings and planning for the recreation center. They have also been at various grants. One possible grant is from Texas Parks and Wildlife which would be used for a walking trail that could connect to the new library. Council Liaison's Report: · Council is accelerating the sale of bonds for new projects. Committee Reports: · The board member absences statement does not need to be changed in the LAB By-Laws. Agenda format and new board member selection still needs to be reviewed. Update on new library building project · Melissa will be getting information from the architects about pavers of various sizes for the entry at the front of the library. These pavers could have quotes on them. · Robert Wilkens would like to paint a mural in the children's area. He will be invited to come and speak at the October meeting. Discussion of Library fund-raising projects . Selling pavers for the courtyard. · Selling book bags and T-shirts. · Patti, Neota, Laura, and Ruth will serve on a fund raising committee. A meeting date and time will be set at the next LAB meeting. Items by Library Board members · Carl has submitted a letter of resignation. · Bob and Ruth Tienor have been making book clocks to be sold with the funds going to the new library. The clocks will be on display in the case in the library entry. Simone made the motion to adjourn. Patti seconded. Motion carried.
