SCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD (LAB) MINUTES

The LAB met on May 1, 2006 with the following members present:

Minutes: Minutes for the April meeting were presented. Simone moved to accept the minutes
and Barbara seconded. Motion carried.
Treasurer's Report: Barbara presented an amended February report and the March report.
April bookstore sales are down. Patti moved to accept the reports. Laura seconded. Motion
carried.
Citizen Comments: none
Librarians' Reports:
. The stats for April were as follows: 20,805 in circulation. This was 3% above the same
period oftime last year and 8% above last year's over all circulation.
. Nicki is continuing to work on the summer reading program. It will be May 31-July 27.
It will start with a bike rodeo. The Police Department and Optimist Club will assist with
the event. Alex Hartman and American Bank of Texas have made monetary donations.
On-line registration and information is on the library web page.
. Outdoor movies will be shown on the 3rd Saturday of June, July, and August. Charlie and
the Chocolate Factory and March of the Penguins are two of the films. This may be the
last year of showing movies because of the film projection needs for new movies. Old
movies could continue to be shown.
. The data corrections/info on the patron cards is on-going.
. Number of new cards issued this fiscal year is 1843 with 1143 ofthose issued this
calendar year.
. Melissa and staff are weeding the fiction and large print sections.
. The Girls Scouts donated some extra plants that they had from a service project.
. On May 11 AALS is presenting a workshop titled "Challenges to Library Materials". It
is at the downtown SA Library and Melissa invited board members to attend.
. The internet has been down again.
Committee Reports: none
Old Business:
. It was suggested we use the Summer Reading Program theme -- Reading: Sport of
Champions - for the float. Ideas of what would be on the float -- children reading books
dressed in sport apparel, an adult reading to toddlers, and a big book with atrophy.
New Business:
. John's Reserve Unit is being activated and he may have to leave the area.
. Concern was expressed about the status of a Reservist in this situation. It was felt that the
Reservist should not have to resign. Patti moved that if a board member serving in the
Reserves is called for active duty and must leave the area, he/she becomes an ex-officio
member and another member is appointed. Upon return to the area, he/she remains an
ex-officio member and then fills the next vacant seat on the LAB. Laura seconded.
Motion passed.
. Mary moved to accept Neota Brady as a LAB member. Barbara seconded. Motion
carried.

Simone made the motion to adjourn. Patti seconded. Motion carried.
The next LAB meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 5, 2006 at 7:00 p.m.
