The minutes were presented. A correction was made in spelling; Cale is the proper spelling of the realtor's last name who may be a LAB candidate. Margaret moved to accept the cbrrected minutes, ,and Marge seconded. Motion passed. Julie presented the treasurer's report. Mary moved to accept this report, and Marge seconded. Motion passed. LIBRARIAN'S REPORT Stats: Resident cards issued: Non-resident cards User fees Reciprocal cards ", " 88 84 1 3 Fines, etc. Copier fees Attendance Circulation $181.45 $ 92.65 2681 4023 Reported by Gail: The Collection stands at: Adult, 10,311; YA, 584; Juvenile, 3,811; Filmstrips, GVEC has brought a geothermal pump report for our perusal. Bob Schwartz said that the library's duct work is improperly set up, hence the problem of the workroom always being hot. Gail has information on working with library boards. She did not contact Donald Cale because this info states that we should diversify members regarding race, sex, age, etc. Summer reading club begins next Wednesday and runs for six weeks. Sick leave has at times been a problem. Both paid clerks called in sick during the same week. One has used her alloted sick day each month for seven months. The meeting room problems with time conflicts, carelessness of those using the room, and lack of time for library-sponsored events seem to be relentless. Mary and Margaret recommended that non-library programs should be booked:~ore than one week in advance. Discussion also suggested that those groups that are careless with library facilities should be denied use of the meeting room. The denial would not constitute discrimination because their carelessness would be just cause. Gail passed out survey sheets tallied from library patrons' responses. Check Point Security Systems will send a rep to a LAB meeting to answer our questions about safeguarding our materials. Margaret asked that 3M also be invited for comparison purposes. (After one year using 3M Alamo Heights H.S. lost only 17 books.) Earl suggested a security alarm for the front door, too - not just the main entry doors. The genealogy section is working well and being used. Bill Gooch is still coming June 13 to give advice about the addition. 132. ~ The luncheon for library volunteers will be the third Monday in July. We have two new good volunteers. One is a vandalism volunteer doing resti- tution wQrk; the other is Pia Jarman, a lady with energy and good ideas. She is willing to sponsor a junior volunteer group and loves to do scrapbooks. Gail cannot attend the national library convention: in New Orleans; she has much going on here, plus the meeting topics are not as applicable to her needs as she had hoped. She will watch for the next Public Librarians Associ- ation Convention. Mr. Gonzalez is doing a good job on the shrubs, etc. He is paid from petty cash. Margaret will keep an eye on the trimming of the pittosporum so that it is rounded rather than squared off. Mr. Harden says the holly needs top soil and fertilizer. Earl suggested that Gail submit a work order for these items. FINANCE COMMITTEE This committee will meet after the Five-Year Plan Committee prioritizes money needs. Discussion ensued about the position of Librarian in the City of Schertz and its current salary. Consensus held that the Finance Committee should request a salary increase for paid library staff at an upcoming city council meeting. PUBLIC RELATIONS It was noted that Connie had submitted an article to the newspaper about recent action in LAB meetings. BUILDING AND PROPERTY It was reported that the city water department extended the sprinkler system into the new addition area. OLD BUSINESS The Library's tenth anniversary open house will be held on June 11th, 10 to 4. Mary will get a cake from a lady in Live Oak. We can run to Wuest's for cookies if necessary. The hospitality table will be in the Courtney Room with cake, coffee, tea, punch, etc. LAB members should help host when they can. Mary will begin at 10:00 a.m., Margaret will come at 11:00, and Gail will be there all day. Gail will call Don Drake for newspaper photos. Mike at Big M's will provide a trailer and truck for our float free of charge. We will meet Sunday night, July 3rd, at 7:00 behind the Library to do the skirting. We will complete the top of the float at 8:00 a.m. on the 4th; The parade starts at 10:00 a.m. We must line up at 9;15 a.m. at Clemens High School. Wording on the side shall be: READING IS FOR EVERYONE ANYWHERE. The city has three cable TV free installations, which is already over the normal limit. LAB members agreed that the Library should have such a hook-up. Commissioner Jim Brannon could not attend our meeting to discuss our request for funds from the county. Commissioner Brown is really the library authority, but he was attending another meeting. Gail and Earl went to a commissioners' court meeting today which was mostly about the Seguin library. Their by-laws of 1975 made them an independent committee. The county and the City of Seguin established this committee in the 1960's. Commissioners' Court passed a motion today rescinding the 1975 motion. Then the county judge recommended a joint meeting of the Seguin library people, this committee, and a representative from Schertz Library. '. ~ There was discussion about filling the vacant LAB positions. Ruth suggested Gerald Thurman. Earl again recommended Gordon Davis, who is a senior citizen. Jim Schriver, president of the Schertz Business Club, has expressed an interest. Merle Ruth Behne is a senior citizen that taught the genealogy classes. She told Connie that she is eager to serve on the library board. Earl also asked Gail to obtain the Planning and Zoning volunteer applicants from steve Simonson as possible contacts. We will manage all three ticket booths at the city park from 8 to 9 p.m. on July 4th. NEW BUSINESS Randolph Library is weeding, and we should watch for their auction. The July meeting of LAB will be on the second Monday of that month. Schertz City Council was approached for $500.00 to help fund the Guadalupe County Literacy Council. During discussion the LAB members felt that the money should be spent on ~ppropriate books for here that pupils can use in Schertz Library. Earl submitted his letter of resignation from the Schertz Public Library. Advisory Board. Mary will now move from Vice Chair to Chairman. Earl was recently elected to the Schertz City Council. He reviewed his goals for the library and how many had been met during his five months as board chairman. Julie moved that the meeting be adjourned. Margaret seconded. Motion passed.
