LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES

The Library Advisory Board met in regular session on Monday, September 12, 1988,
at 7:30 p.m.
Members present:

The minutes were presented. Tony moved to accept the minutes. Ruth seconded. MP.
Julie presented the treasurer's report. Connie moved to accept it, and Margaret
seconded. MP.

The Collection stands at: Adult, 10,475; YA, 592; Juvenile, 3945; Filmstrips,
Gail and June completed the 900's inventory, evaluating as they went along.
The computer will cost a total of $1270.00. It will greatly help with overdues
as well as paperback inventory. Gail needs approximately $450.00 to go along
with available funds for the purchase. Tony moved to allot the additional
$450.00 from the CD account. Margaret seconded. MP.
Gail stated that the vertical file and overdues are top priorities.
There is no city money for another paid clerk; therefore, a Monday opening of
the Library is not feasible.
Gail will buy an answering machine, especially for use on Mondays.
Gail met Mr. Sweatt, new city manager and gave him the history of SPL, LAB
members' names, etc. He seems very interested in the LIbrary.

Gail will attend 6 Saturday classes in ~n this semester on referencing.
Cataloguing is getting somewhat caught up.
The SAALS meeting is Friday, September 30th. Ju~e cannot be the rep after all;
Connie, as alternate, will probably go.
The Schertz Business Club will dO~3te money toward the addition or building
when we give them a prioritized list.
A Seguin video stDrewill give us three A-frame racks suitable for ma;jazines.
Tony, Mary, or Connie have trucks for pick-up after September 25th.
Gail thanked the Board for support in library staff pay raises.

newspaper articles on volunteers, library sections, etc.

Checkpoint security system would cost a $10,000 minimum; 3M says $12,000.
These estimates do not include extras for front door entrance, future addition doors,
etc. This cost must strike a security system from our priority list for awhile.
Tony said that the AC problem is also a compressor difficulty, besides the faulty
duct work. Gail will call GVEC for more info about heat pumps, cost-efficiency,etc.
as well as about lighting for book shelving, outlets, and insulation for the addition.
Since Gerald works with heating and AC on RAFB, he will give suggestions here and
evaluate GVEC recommendations to be written up as bids.
Tony moved to amend the motion of July 11, 1988, by making the finishing of
the addition first priority for LAB funds and to table the security system indefinitely.
Marge seconded. MP. Tony further suggested that Bob Tienor might be able to give
us an idea of the cost for addition finishing materials.
Gail discovered that the electrical main switch was recently tripped. ~
OLD BUSINESS
Connie asked about sponsoring a fall genealogy course. LAB said to ask Mrs.
Behne to teach in the spring. LAB members expressed the desire to arrange a group
meeting room with genealogy materials in the addition so that students could have
hands-on experience during classes.
Ruth reported that David Arneson of Savannah $quare in Schertz may be interested
in becoming a LAB member. He built the picture book shelves. Tony moved to invite
him to be a LAB member. Ruth seconded. MP.
Mary reminded the LAB that a certificate of appreciation had been presented
to Earl Hartzog at a city council meeting.
Tony, Ruth, and Margaret attended city council meetings on the budget.
Genealogy society workers have done a lot of work on readying their materials
for library use.
Connie volunteered to videotape suitable TV programs to increase our inventory.
Gail will get tapes to her and names of programs that are legal to tape and circulate.
NEW BUSINESS
Mary welcomed Gerald as a new LAB member. He was appointed to the Building
Committee.
Ruth said that she had been approached by Humane Society members about the
possibility of having the dance/auction at the VFW for an increase in attendance.
The time must be un a Sunday afternoon. Humane Society is sponsoring a hoedown
at VFW on Sept. 25th. The Library Board could perhaps sponsor a jamboree there.
There being no further business, Connie moved to adjourn. Tony seconded. MP.
