SCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MEETING
The LAB met in regular seSSIon on August 2, 1993.
Members present: Richard Cervantes, Margaret Riley, Julie
Parr, Ruth Tienor, Dan Schofield, Gerald Thurman, Mary
McAllister, Connie Brison, and Gail Douglas, Librarian.
The minutes were presented. Mary moved to accept the minutes
as corrected, and Julie seconded the motion. MP.
The treasuer's reports were presented. Connie moved to accept
the June report, and Ruth seconded the motion. MP. Ruth moved
to accept the July report, and Margaret seconded the motion.

Librarian's Report:
The July activity report was presented. Gail announced
that former LAB member David Arneson had married on June 24th.
She had received two requests for use of the meeting room. The
first was from Jason Markulin, a student at Clemens, on behalf
of a gaming group. Gail told him to come'to the August board
meeting so that he could speak to us. He did not attend. The
LAB directed Gail to tell him to come to our September meeting
on the 13th, and we can then determine if his group's
activities meet policy standards. The second request was from
Mrs. Wisecup, who wants to hold a tea on Sunday, September
19th. Request was not approved because policy states that the
meeting room may only be used during regular library operating
hours.
Also, Gail announced the workshops on policy sponsored by the
state library. She will register for three to attend. She
will go, plus Margaret will try to go on August 17th in
Kerrville, and Dan will try to attend the August 19th session
in New Braunfels.
We discussed bricking the building. Gail reported that we
could get a 25% discount now from the contractor by
piggybacking off the recently-completed project on the new
animal control center. This method, according to Johnny
Bierschwa1e, would cost us $18,000-$20,000. Ass't City Manager
Steve Simonson said that the city might be able to match our
funding with an equal $10,000 this fall. The foyer still needs
work with double-glassing, etc. so that it will act as a buffer
for the heat and cold problems now occurring. The LAB has
about $12,000 available for use now. We directed Gail to
pursue estimates, discussions with city officials, the
contractor, etc., considering both the foyer work and bricking.

Gail reported that the city budget is not yet completed. After
two budget cuts, the library budget now stands at $112,000.
More cuts may occur. An additional 10 hours per week for a
library clerk was tentatively approved, but the change cannot
begin until April 1. 1994. County funding to libraries is in a
confused state now, and that can affect our Schertz Library
budget for the coming fiscal year. Because Marion now has a
library and will receive county funds, the commissioners' court
has three libraries in the county to consider.
Gail presented our second place trop~ in the municipal category
from the July 3rd Schertz Jubilee Parade. Pictures of the
float were viewed, also.
Sandy, who is in charge of our children's program, left the LAB
a lovely cake with the sentiments, "Thanks for all your
support!" Tasty!
Committee Reports: Kudos regarding the success of the parade
float!
Old Business: Clara Neumann was indeed selected the Star of
the Month volunteer. Wily Gail managed to preserve the element
of surprise and get Clara to the city council presentation
unaware of the real nature of her visit.
New Business: Ruth reported having spoken to Sharon Ricketts
about joining the LAB. We have a vacancy, due to Sylvia
Marbach's resignation. Sharon was very interested and wants to
be reconsidered at a later date. Ruth will now check about the
position with Patty Lovelady, a former LAB member.
Also, Ruth made the motion that we moveover the amount of
$100.00 from the CD account to the one that usually has about
$200.00 for the board's use for miscellaneous, small needs.

Julie moved the meeting be adjourned. Ruth seconded the
motion. MP.
