LAB 04-05-2004 . SCHERTZ PUBLIC LffiRARY ADVISORY BOARD (LAB) MINUTES The LAB met on April 5, 2004 with the following members present: Simone Bailey Barbara Ricks Ruth Tienor Julie Parr Margaret Riley Mary McAllister Gail Douglas Melissa Uhlhorn Holly Smith (Children's Librarian) Minutes: Minutes for the March 2004 meeting were presented. Ruth moved to accept the minutes and Julie seconded. The motion carried. Treasurer's Report: Julie presented the February report. The cash account balance at . the end of February was $9,089.55, with $11,449.70 in the investment account. Also,;1\ MA:roh $375.19 was deposited in bookstore sales, and $75.00 was deposited for donations. Mary moved to accept the treasurer's report and Ruth seconded. The motion carried. . Librarians' Report: · Melissa reported that the circulation desk counter top was installed and turned out well. A new chair with a rung is needed to fit the new desk comfortably. The cost of the desk was less than the allotted $2,500. Melissa would like to use a portion of the left over money to purchase a new chair that is available from the Brodart warehouse. Julie suggested that Melissa use money to purchase the chair. · Melissa also reported that a new de-magnetizer will eventually be needed to make things work more smoothly. A corner unit for the desk would also allow for efficiency. Simone suggested that Melissa find out from the representative how much the corner unit would cost. There was a consensus among the LAB to allow Melissa to use excess money to purchase the needed desk extensions if there is enough. · Melissa and Holly reported on the summer movies. Three movies have been selected: Finding Nemo, Mary Poppins, and Brother Bear. Rick Uhlhorn will pay for one movie, the city will pay for one, and the LAB will pay for one. The movies will be shown on the third weekend of each month during the summer. Plans for snacks during the movies were also discussed. Suggested snacks were Goldfish and Teddy Grahams. A final decision will be made at the next meeting. · Melissa is looking for estimates on a cigarette butt receptacle for outside the library door. She will see if there is money in the library budget to purchase one. · Stats for the month were 19,671 items checked out, a 0% increase over last year. Melissa reported that a slow Spring Break may be a factor. She also reported that three youths were caught stealing a book during Spring Break. The theft was reported to the Schertz Police Dept. · Gail had drawings of three light styles that were viewed by the LAB. She will get estimates on the style selected and then talk to Mark Marquez about purchasing. · The litter pick-up along F.M. 78 from 3009 to Schertz Parkway took 3 hours to complete. · The pavilion at the pool is still being worked on. . . . . · Gail reported that a safety cushion, Kiddie Cushion, is being installed around every playground apparatus at Pickerell Park. The Scouts are also painting some of the equipment. · The renovation of the Good Shepherd Church property is still in the works. A final contract has not been officially signed because asbestos abatement has to be done. Committee Reports: None New Business: - Holly and Melissa asked the LAB for $1,000 to provide for three performances during the Summer Reading Club. They have money for the reading program, but need additional money to pay for the performers. They plan to have Joe McDermott, Ballet Folklorico, and Mike Hicks. Jennifer made the motion to provide money for the performances. Julie seconded the motion. The motion carried. -The LAB agreed to have a combined Community Services float for the 4th of July Parade. Ideas will be discussed at the next meeting. Old Business: Margaret and Melissa attended the AL.A membership meeting on March 5 in Marion. Jennifer made the motion to adjourn the meeting. Ruth seconded. The motion carried. The next meeting will be on Monday, May 3, 2004, at 7:00 p.m. in the meeting room at the Community Center.
