LAB 05-03-2004 ~ . SCHERTZ PUBLIC LffiRARY ADVISORY BOARD (LAB) MINUTES The LAB met on May 3, 2004 with the following members present: Barbara Ricks Ruth Tienor Julie Parr Margaret Riley Mary McAllister Gail Douglas Melissa Uhlhorn Carl Douglas Minutes: Minutes for the April 2004 meeting were presented. Margaret moved to accept the minutes as corrected. Ruth seconded. The motion carried. Treasurer's Report: Julie presented the March report. The cash account balance at the end of March was $9,517.55 and $11,459.64 was in the investment account. Ruth moved to accept the treasurer's report and Mary seconded. The motion carried. . Librarians' Report: · Melissa reported circulation for April was 18,079 which was a 3% increase over April oflast year. Circulation for the year so far is a 6% increase over 2003. April attendance for children's story time was 253, which is a 20% decrease from last year, however overall attendance is up12%. There have been 2,112 children attend so far this year. · Plans are underway to have activities for tweens to be volunteers and to have computer programs that are age appropriate. Melissa is working with librarians at the intermediate schools to try to set up these activities. · Bills for completed work on the circulation desk have been submitted. Melissa reported that a new demagnetizer has been purchased but will not be used until the corner unit that still needs to be added to the circulation desk is made. She will make final drawings of what is needed and then submit the bid. She will also include the price of the new chair that will fit the desk as part of the bid. · Holly has met with James Schindler and information on the summer movies will be in the city newsletter. It was decided to forgo Brother Bear and replace it with Spy Kids 3-D. This will probably draw more people. The movies are scheduled on the following dates: June 19 , July 17, and August 21. · Work has begun on the women's restroom and is going well. · Gail reported that the estimate for the lights chosen by the board last month was $13,000 so she is shopping for alternatives. She might check with G.V.E.C. to see what styles they may have in decorative lights. · Gail will meet with landscape designers on May 10, 11, and 12 in the meeting room of the Community Center. There are 60 acres behind the city complex which covers each side of the flood plain. This area can be utilized and made to look nice with the understanding of the flood plain situation. · The theme for the July 4th parade is "Let Freedom Ring." A Watts Elementary third grader won a poster design contest and her design will be used on T-shirts that will be sold as a fundraiser for the city. It was suggested that we design the Community Services float around that design which includes the Alamo and the Liberty Bell. . 4- . Committee Reports: Margaret reported that work continues to straighten and organize the bookstore. Also, a gentleman from her church may be available to volunteer. New Business: Former board member Jake Valadez passed away. Mary will send a card on behalf of the board to his family. Council Representative: Carl Douglas reported on the following activities in Schertz: · Strategic planning is being done to prioritize the bond. Drainage and streets will be the priority. Plans for the old Good Shepherd property and ways to include the library in the bond are also being discussed. · Plans for the 3009-1-35 area have been finalized and work will begin soon, · Work on the Wal-Mart store should also begin soon. It is scheduled to open in March of next year. · A doughnut shop is to be built next to the Human Resources building on Schertz Parkway. · The apartment complex that is being built off the 1-35 access road and Schertz Parkway will include a public road similar in design to Schertz Parkway. · Work on the shopping center next to the city offices has begun, but no information is known about the businesses that will be there.
