SCHERTZ PUBLIC LffiRARY ADVISORY BOARD (LAB) MINUTES
The LAB met on June 7, 2004 with the following members present:

Guest Amy Madison, the city's Community Development Director, gave an informative
presentation on the various projects going on in Schertz. She stated that Schertz has been
compared to Round Rock in development potential. Locations, such as the new Wal-
Mart, were pointed out on an aerial map of the city. She also spoke of the importance of
having commercial and retail businesses as well as houses in order to have a successful
city.
Minutes: Minutes for the May 2004 meeting were presented. Ruth moved to accept the
minutes. Margaret seconded. The motion carried.
Treasurer's Report: Julie presented the April report. The cash account balance at the
end of April was $9,85~1?2+~!ld $11,469.35 was in the investment account. $323.40 in
bookstore sales was 1~.g~l1t~a:for May. Mary moved to accept the treasurer's report and
Lisa seconded. The motion carried.
. Librarians' Report:
Melissa reported the May circulation was 17,875, which was a 1% increase over
May oflast year. May attendance for children's story time was 408, which is an
18% increase from last year.
June 7 was the official kick-off for the Summer Reading Program. 130-140 were
in attendance. Holly will come to the August meeting to review the program.
8 children attended the orientation for tween volunteers. Three of those have been
working so far. T5 Lftc-
Melissa and Margaret attended the joint TLA &~ meeting in New
Braunfels on May 19. Discussions were held on public library standards and
minimum criteria for system membership. Schertz Library is in good standing at
this time. The LAB may need to go over policies to see if any changes or
additions are necessary. Melissa would like to go over the policies later in the
year.
Gail reported that architects will present plans for the City of Schertz Recreation
Facility to the council on June 9. She showed the LAB the master plan for the
facility. The estimated cost for the entire project would be approximately
$12,000,000, and could be done in phases. $5,000,000 of the proposed project
amount would go for a new library. The city is looking into bond planning and
rates. Gail feels this is a doable project and is something the city needs and wants.
The LAB will meet on July 2 at the library to work on the parade float.

Committee Reports:
Old Business: Mary sent a card from the LAB to the family of former member Jake
Valadez
Ruth made the motion to adjourn the meeting. Mary seconded. The motion carried.
There will not be a LAB meeting in July.
The next meeting will be on Monday, August 2, 2004, at 7:00 p.m. in the meeting room
at the Community Center.
