LAB 04-05-1999 , SCHERTZ PUBliC liBRARY ADViSORY BOARD (LAB) MiNUTES The LAB met on April 5, 1999 with the following members present: Margaret Riley Norma Head Pattie Lovelady Barbara Ricks Julie Parr Gail Douglas Mary McAllister Pia Jarman The minutes for the March meeting were presented. Norma made the motion to accept the minutes. Julie sec.onded the motion. The motion carried. Treasurer's Report: The reports for February and March were presented. The CD was cashed in for $13,058.52, and the money is now in an investment account. A $25.00 entry on the February report may be a double entry and will be corrected if necessary. Librarian's Report: -$1,000 was received from H.E.B. for the library book promotion held at the beginning of the year. -Gail reported that the circulation statistics are up from last year with 52,895 circulated items in 1998 compared to 54,877 in 1999. Also, the Internet has had 498 users during the month. There have been 2,093 users since the internet was instaiied, with an average of 28 users per day. -Gail is not sure when bids for remodeling are due, but there have been 5-6 contractors in to take measurements for carpet, brick, etc. Hopefully remodeling will begin in a couple of months. -Gail attended a planning workshop in Leakey at the beginning of March. She and the other librarians in attendance discussed how libraries could serve communities in the future. -Gail and Norma attended a meeting in Kenedy where Sue and Tony VanderHeyden received an award for helping small town libraries with grant information. -Gai! will attend the TLA. Convention from Apri! 20-23 in Dallas. She wi!! also attend an electronic data base workshop on the Tuesday before the TLA Convention to get information on ProQuest, a periodical database that includes 325 titles. The service would cost $1200 a year. There is money in the budget and Gail plans to get the service, which would allow library patrons with cards to access the service from home. -Patrons can access the card catalog from home on-line by going to the library web page. Committee Reports: The Policy Committee made sure each member in attendance received revised copies of the 1999 Policy. Old Business: Norma recommended Jake Valadez to fill the empty board position. The LAB agreed to the recommendation, which will need council approval. Council liaison, Pia Jarman, reported that the city now has a tree ordinance to protect certain trees from being cut down by developers. . .. New Business: Fourth of July Parade plans need to be made. A suggestion was made to decorate the float using our own ideas instead of following the city's theme. The motion to adjourn was made by Julie and seconded by Pattie.
