LAB 08-07-1978 11 ., . LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MEETING August 7, 1978 The August Board meeting for the Schertz Public Library was called to order at 7:10 p.m., August 7, 1978. Members attending were: Ruth Tienor, Marguerite Martinez, Kay Sherman, Harriet Lipps, Douglas Mikus, Edith Cloud, Roy Richard, Jr., Evelyn Rogers, Eva Perry, and Kermit Harborth. Also attending were Walter Hill, Earl Sawyer, and Phyllis Knight. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Eva Perry reported a total circulation for the month of July of 1,266 books; Adult books-314; Paperbacks-453; Juvenile and Young Adult-499. We had a total of 7 Interlibrary Loans processed. Borrowers cards issued for the month amounted to 253 for a total to date of 628. Fines collected amounted to $14.70. Story Hour attendance came to 118 during July. We gained 5 teen-age volunteers but lost 4 adult volunteers for a total staff of 36. COMMITTEE REPORTS AND ACTION: Cataloguing: Harriet stated she did not know the exact total of books but estimated about 75 volumes a week were being catalogued. Mr.., Duns comb, salesman for Pathfinder Books, met with the Board members and we purchased 40 volumes at $2.99 each. . r t-, Clean-up: Finance: -2- No report this month. Doug Mikus reported we were operating in the black. Doug the time needed to acquire money from grants. check. Ruth asked Doug will Remodeling: Gerrard Electric will check on a buzzer for the door. Mary has asked for a timer to control the floodlights. A timer has been ordered. Mary has not been able to find a record browser and it was suggested we check with Gary Job Corps Center about building one. Evelynts son is to build a magazine rack but he may need to wait for 15" boards. The white rug has not been picked up at Aladdin's Cleaners downtown. Policy: Mr. Hill has been selected as Alternate to the Texas Conference on Library Services. Twenty people attended the Speaker's Bureau meeting. It was decided that people living on F.M. 1518 having a Schertz or Cibolo mailing address are eligible for Library privileges but those having a Converse address are not. Publicity: Story Hour is being more heavily advertised. Unfinished Business: Due to the success of the 4th of July venture, it was decided we would participate again next year but would try to run the jailhouse or try to have a less expensive booth. We recieved a check from the Greater Randolph Area Chamber of Commerce covering the account of the previous Library conrrnittee. Marion Shannon was unavailable for publicity for the previous conrrnittee. The new shelves have been received and are installed. One shelf was two inches shorter than the others and has been placed in the workroom. Mr. Rusch stated there was no set aisle space regulation. New Business: Due to the Labor Day weekend, the September Board meeting has been changed to the second Monday. Margaret made the motion and Edith seconded, motion was carried. September 10th has been set for the Volunteer Appreciation Day. Meeting will begin at 2:00 p.m. Certificates of Appreciation have been reproduced by a summer city employee. August 28 is the date for the next Volunteer workshop; two sessions will be held, one at 10:00 a.m. and another at 7:30 p.m. Speakers Bureau slots open September 1st. We need to get a speaker more acceptable to the general public. Tuesday evening is a better evening due to BVYA activities. We will try for an October slot. The storeroom is too full and we will need to expand into a second room. We need to schedule a book sale; however, it was decided we would wait for one year. Mr. Hill suggested we use the Community Center for the sale and Ruth suggested we sell the books by the inch; i.e. 25~ and inch for hardbacks and 10~ for paper- backs. The book give-away will be held on August 9th. Margeurite, Kay and Rhnnda will pick up the books. Eva and Ruth will attend the Workshdlp and get books from the gift room. Judy Lytle will visit On August 8th. Mrs. Bechtel is moving to an apartment and has books to donate. She will try to have them delivered to us. Citizens to be Heard: The City has included $100.00 in the City Budget for.next year for books. District 10 will increase their contributlon according to the amount donated to the Library. ,> ". .' > "" -3- Chuck Schlagel refinished the book cart but did not receive a thank you for the work. The thank you note was sent to Jim Maxwell. This should be corrected. Summer reading certificates will be passed out on Saturday, September 9th, a city official should be asked to resent the certificates to the children.
