LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES
The Library Advisory Board met in regular session on Monday, March 2, 1987,
at 7:30 p.m.

Fred presented Mr. Linnear with a cash token of appreciation for his volunteer
services as auctioneer. Don reiterated that he was always available to non-
profit community groups like ours, free of charge.
The minutes from the February meeting were presented. Ruth moved to accept the
minutes and Mary seconded. .
TREASURER'S REPORT
Julie presented the trea~urer's report. Actual profit from the dance/auction
was about $1300.00 after expenses. Earl moved to accept the report and Margaret
seconded.
LIBRARIAN'S REPORT

Reported by Gail:
The Collection stands at: Adult, 9044; Young Adult, 1327; and Juvenile, 3549.
John Jura of Waddell and Reed asked for use of the Courtney room to conduct a
financial seminar. Because several have been sponsored and poorly attended,
the board denied his request.
The Wall Street Journal subscription has expired.
Gail will compile all annual reports into a more accessible arrangement. She
gave a comparison of various statistics from last year and now. Mr. Gilmore
did not require narrative reports this year.
The Red Cross "Home Alone" program held on Feb. 28 was very well attended.
Tuesday and Thursday nights are still quite busy, but the volunteer situation
is better.

A list of the new LAB officers is required by city council. Fred will take
it to the workshop~session on March 11.
FINANCE COMMITTEE
The County Budget money will continue going into CD's. Julie moved that the dance/
auction proceeds be used for circulation materials. Margaret seconded.

PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE
Connie reported' that almost ~ll the thank-you's to dance/auction contributors
had been written. Address confirmations were made for the remaining few, with
Fred taking those from Marion. A thank-you in the newspaper had been issued.
Book sale posters had been ordered. . Book sale flyers could be taken by board
members after the meeting. A book sale announcement had been submitted to
the Herald-News.
BUILDING COMMITTEE
The board discussed putting up a storage building like the one for cats at the
AnimalShelter- a 12'X24' for $1895.00. Earl moved that we recommend to the
city that bids be made for a base bid on a 25'X60' bay addition to the library
building and an alternate 25'X60' bay. Tony seconded. Motion carried. Fred,
Earl, and other interested LAB members will attend the March 11 city council
workshop to submit this request.
POLICY COMMITTEE
Margaret reported that the Seguin library has not revised its censorship policy
since 1965. Our policy is still on line with other area practices. Changes
would be minor if1necessary.
OLD BUSINESS
Literacy Council:1)Margaret reported that the workshop in Jan. certified 25
tutors. It was to help ready non-English speakers for higher levels, like Adult
Education. The literacy program is for those aged 17+, but discussion about a
special case concerning the Polish youngsters in our area transpired. Since
the workshop two tutors with two students in Seguin have been placed, with two
more pending meeting accommodations. A tutor has been added at the library, and
two more are at Schertz Elementary. About 10 students have been assisted during
the last month.2)There are two new phones at the library with the new phone
system. Margaret has a line. 3)A grand proposal has been written for next year.
Notification will be in the fall. 4)Margaret has purchased a typewriter and has
$1600.00 wotth of high interest/low level books.
NEW AND MISC. BUSINESS
A patron has volunteered to run a bookstore once a week, or when needed. Aggie
suggested that we further investigate the use of a small storage room in the
senior citizens' housing area under Mr. Freeman's jurisdiction.
Gail suggested that we display our mission statement before the public, perhaps
over a suggestion box.
Board members expressed thanks to Tony for work he did in transporting books
to the new storage place.
Earl voiced some concerns: l)We should improve the organization of the dance/
auction and the method of getting donations. A raffle might be preferable.
2)We must think about our Fourth of July commitment. Consensus was to discuss it
as soon as the book sale is over. 3)He would like to see budget money for part-
time personnel so that library hours can be extended on Saturdays with Sunday
library hours available. Gail will check about volunteer scheduling, which is
often erratic.
