LAB 08-09-2009 SCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD (LAB) MINUTES August 3, 2009 The LAB met on August 3, 2009 with the following members present: Pattie Lovelady Margaret Riley Laura Wilson Neota Brady Sonya Samora Simone Bailey Mary McAllister Darlene Price Melissa Uhlhorn Gail Douglas Visitors: Recorder: Bob Brockman, Deborah Stone Jeri Chance Pattie Lovelady, Vice Chairman, called the meeting to order. Minutes: Minutes from the regular June 1 meeting and the special meeting on June 11 were presented. A motion to approve was made by Simone Bailey, seconded by Margaret Riley. Motion carried. Treasurer?s Report: Treasurer?s report was presented by Laura Wilson. A motion to approve was made by Mary McAllister, seconded by Neota Brady. Motion carried. The Investment Fund has been changed to the Federated Investment Fund. This will give a higher interest rate. Citizen Comments: Mr. Brockman voiced concern of citizen complaints on selling bookcases. Melissa said she had permission from city to do this. Librarians? Reports: Melissa Uhlhorn and Gail Douglas reported the following. Stats for June were as follows: circulation ? 27,711 patrons ? 20,896 computer usage ? 2,416 info questions ? 782 story time ? 1,224 library cards ? 241 new & 241 renewals phone calls ? 1,076 ILL loans ? 122 volunteer hrs. ? 301.5 restitution hrs. ? 29.5 March circulation is 7% higher this year than last. Six thousand five hundred dollars were raised with the piggy bank and the penny barrel th projects. About 100 pigs have been turned in. Also $4001 was received from the 4 of July booth. The water reclamation grant was turned down as the city was required to earmark $100,000 toward the project. The new library is almost complete. Several doors are still needed, landscaping needs to be finished as well as a few mechanical things. The movers will be here Wednesday through Saturday and everything should be moved by Saturday evening. Bookstore Committee Report: Prices for gift items were discussed: -Magnetic pencil holder $ 2.00 -Tablet holder $ 5.00 -Card holder $ 5.00 -Book card holder $ 5.00 -Pencil holder $15.00 Depending on size, shelves from the old library will be sold for $10 - $20. th The LAB will host a luncheon on Aug 25 for the staff and bookstore volunteers. th August 28 Black Tie and Tales Gala: Gail Douglas reported that Grumpy?s from Bracken will furnish the food. Tables and a bar will be set up, too. The patio courtyard will be open. LAB members will be available to give tours. There will be a jazz quartet playing and Mayor Baldwin will speak at the ?toasting?. th August 29 Library Grand Opening: Melissa Uhlhorn reported that the ceremony will begin at 10 am with the Clemens band playing. Ruth Tienor has program lined up with presentation of letter from Laura Bush, presentation of flag from Edmond Kuempel, presentation of flag from Kay B. Hutchinson, and speeches by the mayor and LAB chairman. There will be performances throughout the day as well as a book signing. Volunteers and the LAB will show how to use the automatic checkouts, run the bookstore, and act as floating hostesses. LAB members will wear their name tags. Library Meeting Room Policy: A draft meeting room policy was presented. A modified policy and a contract form will be presented at a later date. Announcements: The September meeting will be held the second Monday due to the Labor Day holiday. Upcoming agenda items: Memorial policy and volunteer name tags.
