AN ORDINANCE
BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SCHERTZ, TEXAS,
AUTHORIZING CERTAIN PERSONS WHO ARE DISABLED AND UNABLE
TO WORK AND DRAWING DISABILITY BENEFITS AS AUTHORIZED
BY THE SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION TO BE ENTITLED
TO AN AD VALOREM PROPERTY TAX EW1PTION ON THEIR PROPERTY
LOCATED IN THE CITY OF SCHERTZ, TEXAS, AS AUTHORIZED BY
ARTICLE VIII, SECTION l-b(b) OF THE TEXAS CONSTITUTION;
AND REPEALING ORDINANCE NO. 8l-T-19.
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Schertz, Texas finds
a need to offer to those property owners who are certified as being
disabled and unable to work by the Social Security Administration
and are receiving disability benefits under the Federal Old Age,
Survivors and Disability Insurance Program, and ad valorem property
tax exemption.
NOW THEREFORE,
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SCHERTZ, TEXAS:
I
The property tax exemption for persons who are disabled
and unable to work and drawing disability benefits as authorized
by the Social Security Administration, will be in the amount not
to exceed $3,000.00 to be applied to the market value of the residence
homestead owned by th applicant and located in the City of Schertz.
II
Applications may be submitted at any time and must be
accompanied by a copy of all supporting documents granting the
disability rating. The disability condition and verification by
the Social Security Administration must have been in existence
and authorized on January 1 for the application to be honored for
that particular tax year. Incomplete and illegible applications
will be returned to the applicant.
III
Initial applications will be honored at any time during
the year until the date that the Board of Equalization certifies
that year's tax roll. Applications received after that date will
be processed and honored the succeeding year.
IV
Once granted, this exemption is renewable yearly as long
as the disability exists; however, the applicant must re-apply
each year during the rendition period (January 1 throught March
30). Renewals submitted after that date may not be accepted.
V
That all ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict

It is my understanding that the Disabled
Veteran's exemption and the disability residential
homestead exemption, as defined by the Property
Tax Code, are two independent exemptions and can
be and must be granted if the applicant meets the
requirements.
You may wish to verify this with the Property
Tax Board while we still have time to change things.
