AN ORDINANCE
BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SCHERTZ,
TEXAS AMENDING THE SIGN ORDINANCE, NO. 86-s-
28, ARTICLE VI, SIGNS PERMITTED IN ALL
BUSINESS, COMMERCIAL AND MANUFACTURING
DISTRICTS, SECTION 9, DESIGNATION OF
RAILROAD RIGHT-OF-WAY SIGN DISTRICT; AND
PROVIDING A REPEALING CLAUSE.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SCHERTZ, TEXAS

THAT, Sign Ordinance 86-S-28 of the City of Schertz,
Texas, Article VI, Signs Permitted in All Business, Commercial
and Manufacturing Districts is hereby amended in the following
manner:
"ARTICLE VI SIGNS PERMITTED IN ALL BUSINESS, COMMERCIAL AND
MANUFACTURING DISTRICTS
Add:
Section 9
Designation of Railroad Right-of-Way Sign District.
9a. A special sign provision district is hereby
created to be known as the Railroad Right-of-Way
Sign District. For the purpose of this Section the
Railroad Right-of-Way Sign District is that area
bounded by the following lines:
(1) on the West by the Cibolo Creek,
(2) on the East by the Dietz Creek,
(3) on the South by Farm to Market (FM) 78,
(4) and on the North by the Southern Pacific
Railroad tracks.
9b. Purpose
9b.(1) To improve the appearance of a
principal roadway and major entrance into the
City by establishing a standard for uniform
billboard signs (see definition).
9b.(2) Eliminate traffic hazards which distract
motorists or impair the driver's ability to see
pedestrians, obstacles, or other vehicles, or
to read traffic signs.
9b. (3) Establ ish uniformity of signs in this
area and limit the number of signs.
9c. Sign Regulations
9c.(1) Sign Area: The area of a billboard sign
shall not exceed forty (40) square feet
(outside measurements). Signs may be two-sided
signs.
9c.(2) Height: Maximum height of sign from the
ground to the top of the sign shall be a
maximum of twelve <12') feet, minimum height
ten <10') feet.
9c.(3) setback: Half the distance between the
right-of-way for FM 78 and the railroad tracks
right-of-way.

9c.(5) Construction:
a. There shall be a maximum of eight (8')
feet and a minimum of six (6') feet between
the ground and the bottom of sign.
b. The sign shall be mounted on a single
monopole type pipe of at least three (3")
inches in diameter.

shall not be larger than ten (10') feet long
and four (4' ) feet high (outside
measurements).

9c. (6) Placement: No sign shall be placed
within 50 feet of any intersection.
9d. Removal of Signs From District
All owners and/or advertisers of signs
presently in this district will be informed
that the sign(s) will be removed when
reconstruction of FM 78 begins, at no expense
to the City.
ge. Abandoned or Damaged Signs
ge. (1) Article VII of this

deteriorated as to become a public hazard shall
be repaired or removed within thirty (30) days
of notification by the City's Building
Inspector. If damage and deterioration is
within 6 months of the date for the beginning
of the reconstruction of FM 78, repair or
replacement will not be permitted.
9f. Non-Conforming Signs
9f.(1) Non-Conforming Signs. For the purpose
of this Section, non-conforming signs shall be
defined as signs existing at the effective
date of this Section which do not conform to
the specifications listed in Para. 9c above.
9f. (2) Repair of Non-Conforming Sign. Non-
conforming signs may be repaired if the damage
does not exceed fifty (50%) percent of its
replacement cost at time of damage.
9f. (3) Removal of Non-Conforming Sign. Non-
conforming signs shall be removed or shall be
altered so as to conform with the provisions of
this Section on or before January 1, 199_,
unless the widening of FM 78 occurs first.

9g. Exempt Signs
9g.(1) Signs erected by the State, County or
City government.
9g. (2) Signs erected for the control of
traffic.
9h. Permits: Permits will be issued in accordance
with Article IX, this Ordinance."

All ordinances and parts of ordinances in conflict with this
ordinance are hereby repealed.

must be removed due to reconstruction of FM 78.
