10-27-2011MINUTES SCHERTZ HISTORICAL PRESERVATION COMMITTEE MEETING OF OCTOBER 27, 2011. CALL TO ORDER Chairman Weirtz called the meeting to order at b:30 with a quorum present. Voting members present: Tom DeKunder, Lau Faehrkolb, Gail Hyatt, Cynthia Palmer, Pete Perez, Earl Sawyer, Andreas Wooten, Diana Webb, Jim Webb, Dean Weirtz. Associate members present: Bob Crawford, Dickie Day Judy Womac. Introduction of Guests Chairman Weirtz introduced Karen Boyd, Barbara Hall and Connie Rodriguez. Presentation: Karen Boyd - Comal County Historical Commission Activity. Ms Boyd spoke about Commission's efforts to use a federal matching grant of $40,000 to begin to survey and map properties in this quadrant of the county first. She discussed the desire to mark historic sites and generate archeological surveys of the area. Discussion and /or Action Items 1. Minutes - Consideration and/or action regarding the approval of the minutes of the regular meeting of July 28, 2011. A motion to approve the minutes was made by Lou Foelu'kolb and seconded by Andreas Wooten. The motion carried unanimously. 2. Fund Expenditures -Consideration and/or action regarding the submission of members' expense vouchers. Chairman Weirtz submitted a request for reimbursement in the amount of $797.50 for plaques including an explanatory plaque for the visitor center. Gail Hyatt submitted a request far reimbursement for $257.11 to cover the cost of supplies for the cemetery project and finalized books as well as the cost of the Texas History Symposium. A motion was made by Tom DeKunder and seconded by Andreas Wooten to approve the voucher submissions and carried by a unanimous vote. 3. Treasurer's Report: Consideration and/or action regarding the book sales activity during the third quarter 2011 and other fiscal matters. Treasurer Lou Foelu•kolb reported that one book had been sold during the fiscal year and a total of 533 books have been sold to this point in time. 4. Remembrances Fall 2011 Newsletter and Special Edition Articles: Consideration and/or action regarding the publication of the Fa112011 Newsletter and Special Edition Articles. Chairman Weirtz requested approval for the publication of the Fall Newsletter and two Special Remembrance articles. A motion was made by Earl Sawyer and seconded by Gail Hyatt to accept the newsletter submission and the drafted articles for publication. The motion passed by a unanimous vote. 5. Book Proposal Projects: Consideration and/or action regarding proposals for publication of books relating to historical events, people and places in Schertz and its ETJ. Chairman Weirtz reviewed the actions taken since the last meeting regarding the proposal for a subcommittee to develop a draft booklet or pamphlet including historical items to promote visitor interest in Schertz. Chairman Weirtz presented a draft that would be sent to City administrators for further development. Chairman Weirtz advised that two proposed book projects. One would involve collaboration with the Comal Settlement Association group in the newly annexed portion of northeast Schertz and Mr. Weirtz. The second book as suggested by Gail Hyatt would be a picture book to include copies of the Committee's collection of "Old" Schertz photographs. Tom DeKunder and Bob Crawford volunteered to prepare a sample DVD for this purpose and share it at our next meeting. A motion was made by Cynthia Palmer and seconded by Pete Perez to approve both of these projects. The motion was passed by a unanimous vote. 6. Nominations for Historic Landmark Designations -Consideration and/or actions regarding nominations for historic landmark designations. Applications for Historic Landmark designation for the Wenzel/St. Joseph Cemetery, 6510 FM 4$2 (Corral Co.), Alamo Schuetzen Verein (shooting club), Old Nacogdoches Rd. {Corral Co.), Friesenhahn Family Cotton Gin, 2290 Old Nacogdoches Rd. {Corral Co.) and Kramer House (Schertz Visitors Center, 1730 Schertz Pkwy., were considered. A motion was made by Tom DeKunder and seconded by Lou Foehrkolb to approve all the applications. The motion was passed by unanimous vote. 7. Exhibit and City Marker Activity -Consideration and/or actions regarding exhibit placement and City of Schertz marker placement activity. Chairman Weirtz reported that two separate dedication ceremonies were conducted during October for award of City of Schertz historic markers for those nominees approved at the last Committee meeting. A third ceremony is scheduled for the first week of November at the Randolph Masonic Lodge meeting dedicating the William Schertz Mercantile Building. A railroad exhibit has been placed at the I~•amer House with a historic marker. Sister Historical Society {Riedisheim, France) News -Consideration and/or actions regarding Riedisheim, France Historical Society news. Chairman Weirtz reported that the Riedisheim Historical Society has forwarded multiple copies of its annual Bulletin book that contains a feature article about the Schertz historical landmark dedication program (with photos). Copies have been distributed to the Schertz family (Walter & Lula Mae), Jim and Diana Webb, the Committee and to Chairman Weirtz per the Society's request. Reports Subcommittee Reports - Discussion only - Cemetery: Gail Hyatt reported that the Schertz Mexican Cemetery Book is complete and that copies of the books are available providing detailed information for each of the graves. Additionally, there is a book of unknown grave locations for up to 50 people buried in Schertz. - Historian: No report at this time - Outreach: Chairman Weirtz reported on his letter of inh•oduction and greeting to Schertz's newly hired Director of Economic Development, Mr. David Gwin. Chairman Weirtz reported on Comal Settlement Association activity. Chairman Weirtz reported on his attendance at the Pfeil-Stopper family reunion Sept. 24, 2011. Gail Hyatt and Chairman Weirtz attended the Texas History Symposium in Austin and returned with notes and brochures that were offered to the members. Chairman Weirtz informed us that Comal County Historical Society was raising money for a plaque and that this effort would be helped by several historic articles about this in Schertz Tales. - Museum/Kramer HouselSenior Center Chairman Weirtz report on the installation of the railroad bridge exhibit placed on the grounds of the Kramer House.
