POSITION SUMMARY: Patrols assigned sector on in patrol car, bicycle or on foot, to
control traffic, prevent crime or disturbance of peace, perform preliminary investigations
and arrest violators. Position responsibilities are carried out by performing the following
duties. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
1. REPORTS TO: Patrol Corporal or Patrol Sergeant
2. DIRECTS: Non-applicable
3. OTHER: Works closely with all city employees. Has contact with
representatives of state and federal agencies,
vendors/providers, and the general public.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Under general supervision, patrols an assigned area in patrol car, on a
motorcycle, on bicycle, on foot, or on any means as assigned.
• Reports directly to Patrol Sergeant or Patrol Corporal.
• Maintains a presence in their assigned patrol area, identifies problems or
issues that are important to the community, and seeks resolution of such
problems through the resources of the Police Department, other City
Departments, and/or other governmental or private agencies.
• Conducts preliminary field investigations, reports findings in writing or other
approved methods on prescribed departmental adopted reporting forms or by
other electronics means as prescribed by the department.
• Responds to calls for police assistance by operating a police vehicle in routine
and emergency situations while being able to talk and operate the police radio
and emergency equipment.
• Directs and reroutes traffic around fire or other disruptions by using
recognizable arm movements and a whistle. Reports traffic and other hazards.
• Serves warrants and/or makes arrests under normal and hostile situations.
• Interviews and/or interrogates victims, witnesses and suspects.
• Operates police communication equipment in order to communicate verbally
and by typing information on computer/mobile data terminal.

• Collects and retrieves property and evidence utilizing accepted methods and
equipment, presents evidence and testifies at hearings and in court in
connection with criminal prosecutions,
• Administers first aid, assisting paramedic/medical personnel and able to lift
and/or carry injured persons.
• Active enforcement of traffic violations by issuance of written citations for
traffic and other violations, verbally testifies in court and describes or
illustrates conditions, situations, and occurrences before juries, defense
attorneys, prosecutors and judges.
• Operates firearms in a safe and accurate manner under stressful and life
threatening situations to the extent that one can reasonably protect themselves
and the public from imminent threats of their well-being.
• May provide relief to specific job functions such as radio dispatch or detention
duties or providing assistance at the police facility as necessary.
• May perform other duties, assignments and handle special projects, as
required.

EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES
REQUIRED:
1. High School or G.E.D. certification.
2. Must be licensed by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.
3. Must be able to successfully complete the departments physical fitness testing.
4. Must be able to show proficiency in the department’s firearms qualifications
courses.
5. Must have a valid Texas Driver’s License

JOB PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
POSITION JOB TITLE: Patrol Officer

JOB-SPECIFIC HEARING REQUIREMENTS:
Police Officer applicants must take an audiometer test and meet specified hearing
standards. Please note that no applicant will be considered who exceeds any of the
following:
1. Average hearing loss of 25 decibels (ANSI) at 1000, 2000, and 3000 Hertz
2. Single reading of 35 decibels at 1000, 2000, and 3000 Hertz
3. Single reading of 35 decibels at 500 Hertz
4. Single reading of 45 decibels at 4000 Hertz
JOB-SPECIFIC SIGHT REQUIREMENTS:
Police Officer candidates must have uncorrected vision of no worse that 20/200 in each
eye, corrected to 20/20 vision in one eye and not worse than 20/40 vision in the other eye.
If an individual has a satisfactory history of soft contact lens wear for more than one year
and is able to meet correction to 20/20 in one eye and no worse than 20/40 in the other
eye, safety concerns are considered mitigated and applicant processing may continue. If
an applicant has had laser eye corrective surgery, a six-month waiting period is required
prior to beginning Police Officers' training. The applicant must also provide evidence of
complete healing by an ophthalmology clinical evaluation. Policy for color vision allows
continuation of applicant processing if those who fail initial color vision screening are
able to successfully complete the Farnsworth D-15 color vision test.
Police Officer candidates will be examined for night blindness (also known as nyctalopia)
and must meet specified standards.
