SCHERTZ HISTORICAL PRESERVATION COMMITTEE
MEETING OF OCTOBER 24, 2013.
CALL TO ORDER
Chairman Weirtz called the meeting to order at 6:30 with a quorum present.
Voting members present: Merle Behne, Tom DeKunder, Lou Foehrkolb, Barbara Hall,
Gail Hyatt, Cynthia Palmer, Pete Perez, Stefani Warshaw, Diana Webb, Jim Webb, Dean
Weirtz.
City Representative: Brian James.
Discussion and /or Action Items
1. Minutes - Consideration and/or action regarding the approval of the
minutes of the regular meeting of July 2, 2013. A motion to approve the
minutes was made by Tom DeKunder and seconded by Pete Perez. The
motion carried unanimously.
2. Fund Expenditures - Consideration and/or action regarding the
submission of member expense vouchers. Chairman Weirtz submitted a
request for reimbursement in the amount of $168.62 for supplies and services
including rental of a U -Haul to transport artifacts, sandblasting of plaque,
spray paint, and ink. A motion was made by Merle Behne to approve the
reimbursement to Chairman Weirtz and seconded by Lou Foehrkolb.
Receipts were also submitted for reimbursement by Gail Hyatt for
miscellaneous expenses from the Cemetery subcommittee in the amount of
$82.34. Lou Foehrkolb made a motion to approve the reimbursement to Mrs.
Hyatt and Tom DeKunder seconded the motion which was passed
unanimously.
3. Treasurer's Report: Consideration and/or action regarding the book
sales activity and other fiscal matters. Treasurer Jim Webb reported that
since initial publication, a total of 572 books have been sold. There are only
36 books remaining. No action was required.
4. Newsletter and Remembrances Fall 2013 Special Edition Ar icles:
Consideration and/or action regarding the publication of the W4 2012 DO
Newsletter and REMEMBRANCES Special Edition Articles. A motion was
made by Jim Webb and seconded by Diana Webb to publish an amended
version of the articles. The motion passed by unanimously.
National Registry of Historic Places Listing Application (Coma)
Settlment): Consideration and/or action regarding the application for National
Registry of Historic Places Listing Application at Comal Settlement. Chairman
Weirtz reported that the application research work was halted while he was out
of town (July- August) but has resumed. A final suggested application package
regarding the Saint Joseph's Chapel has been sent to the Texas Historical
Commission for review and approval. No action was required.
6. Consideration of the future involvement for the Schertz Historical
Preservation Committee (SHPC): Consideration and/or action regarding the
future involvement for the SHPC. Tom DeKunder, Subcommittee
Chair and members Lou Foehrkolb and Stefani Warshaw opined about possible
refocus of committee mission to educate or develop mobile museum to maintain
goal of preserving history and artifacts given inability to establish permanent
museum. There was also a recommendation by Barbara Hall for the committee
to meet more frequently. No action was required.
7. SHPC Officer Nominations: Consideration and /or action regarding the
nomination of SHPC officers for calendar year 2014. Discussion of possible
nominees for officer positions for calendar year 2014 revealed candidates for all
but the chairmanship. The final call for nominees will await the January 2014
meeting.
Reports
Subcommittee Reports — Discussion only
- Cemetery: Work continues on 5 cemeteries.
- Historian: No report at this time.
- Outreach: Chairman Weirtz spoke at the Comal County Genealogical Society
about the history of Schertz.
The Comal Association had an adopt -a- highway clean -up last month.
Museum Artifacts are now being stored in a Universal City storage facility.
The Steve Simonson Dinner is scheduled for November 14, 2013.

1. Requests by Committee Members for items to be placed on a future agenda:
New Mission for the SHPC.
Election of New Officers.
2. Requests by Committee Members to City Manager and Staff for information:
None at this time.
3. Announcements by Committee Members: Jim Webb shared article about Gail
Hyatt that he wrote for the Schertz Magazine.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business before the committee, a motion was made by Merle
Behne to adjourn the meeting. The motion was seconded Stefani Warshaw and
carried unanimously.
