SFR Testing Eligible Letter Oct 2014
The City of Schertz has a Firefighter vacancy and is accepting applications for the position
of Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Certified FIRE FIGHTER/EMT-B. You are
eligible to apply by virtue of your receiving a passing score with no high risk grade for any
subsection on the Alamo Area Chiefs Association Hiring Consortium test.. The application
period will open on October 14, 2014 and end at the close of business on October 31,
2014. Acceptable applicants will be notified when to report for the physical ability test. The
top ten candidates after the physical ability test with the highest weighted combined
scores, including preference points, will be invited for an interview on the same day. All
qualified candidates will remain on an eligibility list until October 1, 2015.
Background
Schertz Fire Rescue employs 32 uniformed positions, serving a population of over
32,000 along the San Antonio-Austin Corridor. Schertz is a rapidly growing city with
projections for the population to double within ten years. The Department is expected to
grow along with the community creating many exciting opportunities. We currently have
two fire stations and project opening a third station in 2018. Schertz Fire Rescue is
equipped with top of the line equipment and protective clothing. Schertz Fire Rescue is a

Starting pay is approximately $35,933 annually. In addition, we offer certification pay for
EMT-P, higher education, and advanced firefighting, as well as hazmat and special
operations pay. Employee medical is included and family packages are available as well
as coverage for dental, vision, life, and more. A generous citywide vacation and sick leave
policy, along with an educational assistance program are included. TMRS retirement is
included at 7% employee contribution with a 2 to 1 match by the City. Individual 457
deferred compensation plans are available.
Minimum requirements
Requires Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) (structural fire fighter-basic
minimum) and Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) (EMT-B minimum)
certification at time of application. Applicant must have a passing score with no high risk
grade for any subsection on the Alamo Area Chiefs Association Hiring Consortium test.
TCFP and DSHS certification must be submitted online with the application.
Applicants without documentation will not be considered. Do not submit copies of
birth certificates, driver licenses, social security cards or photo identifications with the
application.

Medical & Immunization Requirements
All new firefighters must maintain an acceptable level of physical fitness for the duration of
their career with the Schertz Fire Department. Annual medical physicals are required along
with annual fitness testing. Proof of Immunization History confirming immunization shall
include:
Measles (Rubella), Mumps, Rubella (German measles) (MMR)
Tetanus/Diphtheria (Td/Tdap) < 10 years
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and titers per CDC guidelines
Varicella (Chicken Pox
Preference Points (Maximum 8 points allowed from any combination.)
Preference Points will be awarded as outlined below. Documentation must be submitted
online for consideration. No documentation will be accepted on test date for consideration.
Any fraudulent documents will disqualify the candidate permanently. All decisions
regarding acceptable documentation and preference points are final.

Honorable Discharge US Military (DD214);
Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited college/university;
Paramedic Certification (NREMT / DSHS)

Associates Degree from a regionally accredited college/university or
acceptable community college (Cannot be combined with Bachelor’s
Degree points)

Intermediate EMT Certificate (NREMT / DSHS).

Physical Ability Test (PAT)
You are required to wear long pants, a suitable shirt, and closed toed boots, or
tennis shoes for the entire examination and physical ability testing portions. The
PAT consists of two parts.
o Stair Master Climb--With weighted vest, climb stairs at a predetermined rate
for three minutes and twenty seconds.
o Physical Ability Course -- Carry a warehouse hose load pack to the 2nd floor;
raise and lower a fire hose through a window; drag a charged fire hose; walk
a serpentine course of cones; and, finish with a fire fighter rescue drag. The
physical ability course must be completed in 3:00 minutes or less to advance,
and based on your time a score is assigned that is part of your overall
candidate score.
