UNDERSTANDING YOUR STATEMENT…
All employees are on a bi-weekly pay schedule. Pay periods end on a Friday, and payday is the Friday following the end
of the pay period. If a holiday falls on a payday the last working day before the holiday will be payday.
Direct deposit statements and regular check stubs display the following information as current to pay period and year
to date (YTD):
DEMOGRAPHIC
The top portion shows your employee identification number, paydate and net wages. Other demographic information
shown is your name and address. If your name or mailing address should change, please notify Human Resources.
EARNINGS
Gross pay is the total amount of all your compensation. It is your regular pay plus any other compensation you receive.
Additional compensation could be on call pay, certification pay, overtime, etc.
DEDUCTIONS
Deductions from your pay may be tax deferred or after tax. Tax deferred means they are deducted from your gross pay
before taxes are calculated. Examples of tax deferred deductions are contributions to the city retirement plan (TMRS),
457(b) plans such as AXA and ICMA, and cafeteria plan deductions such as health, dental and vision premiums. TMRS
and 457(b) plans are only federal withholding deferred, while health, dental and vision are not subject to federal, social
security or Medicare withholding.
Other deductions are after tax. YMCA memberships, United Way contributions, short term disability premiums, and
court ordered garnishments are some deductions that are after tax.
TAXES
Taxes are also deductions from your pay. They include Federal withholding, based on the W-4 you provided payroll,
social security and Medicare. Tax withholding is based on your taxable wages (gross pay less any pre-tax deductions).
RECAP
The Recap section shows current and year to date (YTD) totals for gross earnings, deductions, taxes and your net pay.
Your net pay is the amount you receive after all deductions and taxes. It is also referred to as “take home” pay.
LEAVE AVAILABLE
This section will show your current leave balances as of the end of the pay period. Vacation, sick, military and comp
time balances will be reflected in this section.
DIRECT DEPOSIT
For employees using direct deposit, this section shows the amount of funds allocated to each account. For privacy
reasons, only the last five digits of the accounts appear on a pay statement.
While payroll strives for accuracy, mistakes can happen. Please remember to examine your pay statement every
payday and report any discrepancies immediately to your department representative or Finance.
