Non-Exempt Full Time Fire Fighter
Open September 11th, 2015 thru October 1st, 2015 The City of Schertz is accepting applications for the position of FIRE FIGHTER/EMT-B
to fill immediate vacancies and to establish an eligibility list that will remain in effect for a
period of one year. We employ 32 uniformed positions in two fire stations, serving a population of 32,000 plus along the San Antonio-Austin Corridor. Schertz is a rapidly
growing city with projections for the population to double within ten years, and the
department is expected to grow along with the community creating an exciting opportunity in this progressive department.

Minimum Requirements:
Requires Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) (structural fire fighter-basic
minimum) and Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) (EMT-B minimum) certification at time of application. Letter of TCFP eligibility is acceptable to test. TCFP
and DSHS certification must be submitted prior to final consideration. Copies of certifications must be submitted online with application. Please do not submit copies of birth certificates, driver licenses, social security cards or photo identifications
with the application.
Anyone who took the Video Based Assessment with the Alamo Area Fire Chiefs
Association Hiring Consortium on March 30th and 31st 2015, or will take it September 8th
or 9th 2015 and received a passing score with no high risk grades for any subsection will be consolidated with those taking the Schertz Fire Rescue test on October 8th, 2015.
Other qualified applicants who apply only with Schertz will be eligible to take the same video based assessment on Monday, October 5th, 2015 at 0800 hrs. Those
candidates’ scores will be consolidated with those of the current Alamo Area Fire Chiefs Association Hiring Consortium.
All candidates will be considered for Preference Points, which will be given for military service, higher education, and advanced medical certification as follows (not to exceed 10 points): U.S. Military Veterans with a DD214 showing honorable discharge (3 points);
Bachelor’s Degree (3 points); EMT-Paramedic (3 points); Associate’s Degree (2 points); EMT- Intermediate (1 point). Medical certification will be by National Registry or by
DSHS. Bachelors and Associates degree must be from a regionally accredited university
or community college and a transcript must be submitted.
You must upload all preference point documentation with the application. All decisions
on allowable documentation and preference points are final.
Further testing to include a physical ability test will be conducted for the top 20 candidate scores from consolidated list at a time to be determined. An oral interview will not be
conducted that same day and further details will be included in the invitation packet prior
to testing.
Offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation and subsequent medical exam and pre-employment drug screening.
Medical & Immunization Requirements: Firefighting is a physically demanding and rewarding occupation. For that reason, to be
considered, all new firefighters must maintain an acceptable level of physical fitness for the duration of their career with the Schertz Fire Department. Annual physicals are
required along with annual fitness testing.
Proof of Immunization History confirming immunization shall include:
Measles (Rubella), Mumps, Rubella (German measles) (MMR)
Tetanus/Diphtheria (Td/Tdap) < 10 years
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and titers per CDC guidelines
Varicella (Chicken Pox)
Medical & Immunization Requirements:
Screening / testing will be completed as part of pre-employment medical examination to
test for:
Tuberculosis (PPD),
Hepatitis C virus (HCV)
Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV) screening.
Pre-employment medical exam and drug test are required if a tentative offer of employment is made to any applicant.
Pay and Benefits:
Starting pay is approximately $38,896* annually, and includes an excellent benefits
package. Employee medical is included and a group of packages are available for dental, vision, life, and more. A generous citywide vacation and sick leave policy, along
with an educational assistance program are included. TMRS retirement included at a
7%, 2 to 1 match, and 457 deferred compensation plans are available. The City of Schertz also pays longevity pay, and advanced certification pay for EMT
Intermediate/Paramedic, Intermediate/Advanced/master Firefighter, and
Associate’s/Bachelor’s Degree Pay. Uniforms and protective gear are provided along with a clothing allowance. Pay for advanced certification is available.
