Publications Editor JD 7 Dec 09CITY OF SCHERTZ - JOB DESCRIPTION Position Job Title: Publications Editor FLSA Status: Exempt   Revision Date: December 2, 2009  Department: Public Affairs Supersedes description dated:        Division: (If applicable)         Supervisor’s Title: Public Affairs Director       JOB SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Public Affairs Director: plans, coordinates, and directs editorial activities and personnel engaged in selecting and preparing material for publication in print and electronic media, corporate magazines, trade journals, newsletters, annual reports, and related publications.   ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Confers with executives, department heads, and editorial staff to formulate policy, coordinate department activities, establish production schedules, solve publication problems, and determine theme of issue or articles. 2. Prioritizes, tracks, handles, and maintains records of projects. 3. Supervises content editors, writers, researchers, advertising sales and production, circulation, or promotion personnel. 4. Writes or assigns staff or freelancers to research and write articles, reports, editorials, reviews, and other material. 5. Coordinates advertising sales, ad proofs, and placement in Schertz Magazine. 6. Reads and evaluates material submitted for publication consideration. 7. Secures graphic material from picture sources. 8. Assigns artists and photographers to produce pictures and illustrations. 9. Assigns staff member, or personally interviews individuals and attends gatherings, to obtain items for publication, verify facts, and clarify information. 10. Selects, supervises, and obtains cost estimates from outside vendors such as photographers, illustrators, paper suppliers, or printers. 11. Coordinates preparation of final materials with graphic designers, suppliers, and printers. 12. Reviews quality of final print or electronic product before release. 13. Prepares or directs preparation of news or public relations releases, special brochures, and similar materials. 1. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES (If supervisor position): Directly supervises employee(s) and contractor(s), carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES (SKA'S) The requirements listed below are representative of the skills, knowledge and abilities required. Good knowledge of principles/practices of journalism and public relations; photography, design, layout, and basic printing/composition. Must have excellent communication skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office, Adobe Products, Power Point presentations, and Web Page management. Computer technology includes the internet and Email. Strong organizational skills. Ability to act as spokesperson, public speaker, interact with a variety of publics, and work well under pressure. Language Ability: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management. Math Ability: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of word processing software; spreadsheet software; accounting software; Internet software; Human Resource systems; Project Management software and Contact Management systems. MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Requires one to two years related experience and/or training. EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university; or two years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: No certifications needed. Must have a valid Class “C” Drivers License. EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS: Computer and/or associated equipment for desktop publishing, pager.
