JOB DESCRIPTION
Title: Meter Service Technician I Department: Public Works
Location: 10 Commercial Place, Bldg 2 Grade: 15-1
Classification: Salaried: Non-Exempt EEO-4: Service and Maintenance
POSITION SUMMARY:
This is an entry-level position involved in the maintenance and up-keep of water distribution, water meter
and meter boxes. Assists in the preparation of reports and records, reading distribution water meters, flow
testing, meter inventory control, bench stock and material supply: has daily contact with the public requiring
tact and diplomacy, makes few decisions, mostly of simple nature. Assists work crews on occasion.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
1. REPORTS TO: Assistant Business Office Manager
2. DIRECTS: Non-applicable
3. OTHER: Works closely with Public Works and other city departments. Has contact with customers
and the general public.
RESPONSIBLITIES:
1. Assists in upload and download laptops for meter reading. Read water meters monthly,
recheck meter readings and reading errors upon water billing clerk’s request.
2. Repairs meter boxes, leaks, flow tests, and performs annual meter calibrations and replaces
water meters as needed. Maintains meter supply room and post, in an orderly fashion.
3. Assists installing meters at new residential and commercial establishments, or upon a service
tap completed by service crews.
4. Turn on new customers and turn off customers daily, and turn off customers for nonpayment,
mails bills, as requested by the Water and Wastewater clerk.
5. Inventories water meters semi-annually and reports all meter replacements and charges.
6. Reports, fixes and replaces all meter problems such as leaks, broken lids, missing meter caps,
etc. During meter reading routes.
7. Maintain vegetation around large meter boxes and vaults.
8. On occasion works with a crew in the installation and repairs of distribution mains and
services.

9. Performs minor maintenance on vehicles, lawn mowers, pumps and small motors. Keeps
tools organized and maintained for immediate operating conditions.
10. Records man-hour expenditures and materials on work orders.
11. Familiarization with the City of Schertz Code of Ordinance, subdivision codes, and water
wastewater Department standards and specifications.
12. Assists other City Departments and Public Works Division as required.
13. Good Housekeeping and organization of tools, vehicles and equipment.
14. Performs other job-related duties as required.
PHYSICAL JOB-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to lift and carry up to 100 pounds and to pull, push or drag up to 100 pounds of materials and
supplies. May be required to stand for extended periods. Must use eyes, ears, hands and fingers to perform
assigned duties and responsibilities. The job of the Meter Tech I is performed mainly outdoors which may
include working on irregular surfaces and rough terrain, and be exposed to all weather conditions. The
Meter Tech I will also be required to climb on ladders, stairs and ramps as well as crawl, sit, squat, reach
above head and shoulders, bend, stoop, kneel, walk, stand, run and twist and work at elevations up to 12 feet.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND TRAINING:
Must have above average communication skills in both verbal and written form.
Requires basic knowledge of reading, writing, construction equipment, ground maintenance
equipment and powered/non-powered hand tools.
EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED equivalent and be computer literate.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must have valid Class “C” Texas driver’s
license.
