SFR Testing Eligible Letter - October 2015
Sir / Madame,
Thank you for your interest in employment with the Schertz Fire & Rescue Department. The applicant testing process is
a series of events that an applicant must pass in order to be considered for employment. These events include a video
based assessment, physical ability test, and interview.
The video based assessment will begin at 8:00 a.m. on October 5Th, 2015 at the City of Schertz - Civic Center, at
1400 Schertz Parkway, Building 5, Schertz, Texas. Candidates with a passing score with no high risk grade for
any subsection on the video based assessment will be consolidated with the current Alamo Area Hiring
Consortium candidates. Those candidates who have a passing score with no high risk grade for any subsection on the
video based assessment and passed the Physical Ability test will be ranked (including preference points), for future
testing and hiring consideration for a maximum of one year.
Note: If you were not able to upload certificates (EMT and/or Fire) on to the online application, then you MUST bring
proof of certification on the day you are scheduled to test. All documents will be verified and you may be excluded later
in the testing process if you are not certified or certifiable on the test date. Schertz Fire Rescue does not hold a fire
academy or cadet course for non-certified applicants.
The physical ability event will continue on a later date starting at 0800 hrs. for the top 20 candidates of the consolidated
list after their preference points are added.
Please be prepared to stay each day from 8:00 a.m. until dismissed.

Video Based Assessment Examination (2+ hours)
o Applicant must score a 70% or higher on the Composite Video Based Assessment Test Score and
have NO high risk grade for any subsection.
Preference Points (Maximum 10 points allowed from any combination.)
Preference Points will be awarded as outlined below. Documentation must be submitted online for consideration. No
documentation will be accepted on test date for consideration. Any fraudulent documents will disqualify the candidate
permanently. All decisions regarding acceptable documentation and preference points are final.
o 3 Points
Honorable Discharge US Military (DD214);
Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited college/university;
Paramedic Certification (NREMT / DSHS)
o 2 Points
Associates Degree from a regionally accredited college/university or acceptable community
college (Cannot be combined with Bachelor’s Degree points)
o 1 Point
Intermediate EMT Certificate (NREMT / DSHS).
o The top 20 candidates will be invited to attend at a later date for the Physical Ability Test (PAT),
starting at 0800

Physical Ability Test – date to be determined
Roll Call will begin at 8:00 a.m. sharp in the Schertz Fire Department Training Room (Building 8). Late
arrivals will not be accepted. (Top 20 candidates)
Physical Ability Test (PAT)
You are required to wear long pants, a suitable shirt, and closed toed boots, or tennis shoes for the entire examination
and physical ability testing portions. The PAT consists of two parts.
o Stair Master Climb
With weighted vest, climb stairs at a predetermined rate for three minutes and twenty
seconds.
o Physical Ability Course
Carry a warehouse hose load pack to the 2nd floor
raise and lower a fire hose through a window
drag a charged fire hose
walk a serpentine course of cones
finish with a fire fighter rescue drag
The physical ability course must be completed in 3:00 minutes or less to advance, and based
on your time a score is assigned that is part of your overall candidate score.
