Bob Andrews Conference Room in City Hall
Board Members present: Johnie McDow, Chairman, Aundra Davis, Stacy Haugen, Harriet Higgs,
Patrick Russell and Fae Simmons.
Staff present: Jim Fowler, Councilman, Brian James, Executive Director Development Services,
Chuck Van Zandt, Parks Manager and Sandy Bryant, Sr. Administrative Assistant.
Others present: F. Branch Archer, Clare Layton, Steven Layton, Ann Mallard and Joel Tanner.
Call to order. Meeting was called to order by Johnie McDow, Chairman at 5:30 p.m.
Hearing of residents:
Ms. Ann Mallard gave the Board an update on Crescent Bend Nature Park Ms. Mallard noted that
visitors from all over visit the Park. According to birding website "ebird" Crescent Bend Nature
Park is rated very high among parks in Bexar County.
Mr. Joel Tanner briefed the Board about the three regional ecological areas at Crescent Bend Nature
Park: Forest Area, Savannah Area and the Creek Area. Mr. Tanner is working on stopping an
invasion of bamboo in the Park.

Agenda Item No. 1. Minutes. Discussion and /or approval of the minutes from the July 28, 2014
regular meeting.
Motion was made to approve the minutes from the July 28, 2014 Schertz Parks and Recreation
Advisory Board regular meeting.

Agenda Item No. 2. Appointment of Representative to sit on City Wide Task Force on Community
Involvement and Future Planning. Chairman Johnie McDow received a letter from Mayor Carpenter
requested all Boards appoint a representative to serve on his City Wide Task Force on Community
Involvement and Future Planning. Ms. Fae Simmons volunteered to serve on this committee
Motion was made to appoint Ms. Fae Simmons to the City Wide Task Force on Community
Involvement and Future Planning.

Haugen.

Agenda Item No. 3. Baseball Fields Dog Park Skate Park Soccer Complex and Trails Update Mr.
Chuck Van Zandt updated the Board that the bleachers for the new ball diamonds have been
delivered; the Dog Park schematic design has been completed; work should begin in early
September on the Skate Park irrigation and landscaping; the Soccer Complex concession building is
approximately 80% complete, the site work is approximately 88% complete and there will also be a
playscape added at the complex ; the Exercise Trail at the municipal complex will be rerouted
around the SAWS and CCMA construction area. No action was taken on this item.
Agenda Item No. 4 Parks and Facility Maintenance Program Updates Mr. Van Zandt updated the
Board on the current parks programs using contractual mowing, community service and volunteer
workers. The use of in -house work calendars for each park employee is being used to identify short
falls and find solutions. No action was taken on this item.
Requests and Announcements:
Agenda Item No. 5. Request by Advisory Board Chairman and Board members for items to be
placed on a future Board agenda. The Board requested the following items be placed on future
agendas:
• Invite SYSA representative to attend a Parks Board meeting.
• Festival of Angels float.
• Wendy Swan park dedication.
• Landscape maintenance at Animal Adoption Facility.
• Parks budget overview.
• Plan for Dog Park.
Agenda Item No. 6. Announcements by Advisory Board Chairman and members
• Date for the next meeting is September 22, 2014.
