JOB DESCRIPTION
Title: Part-Time Kennel Technician Department: Animal Care Services
Location: Animal Services Grade: 7 Step 1
Classification: Non-Exempt EEO-4: Service and Maintenance
POSITION SUMMARY: This is an entry level position related to the general care and
maintenance of all animals boarded in the kennels. This is a front-line position for providing
excellent customer service to members of the general public and other city employees.
Personal contact occurs with other employees of the unit, employees of other departments in
the City of Schertz, citizens, and customers of the department. Service is provided in person
or by phone contact. Occasionally provides direction and supervision to community service
workers and volunteers. Provides guidance, advice and assistance to others on work
assignments. The primary purpose of the position is to provide care and the basic needs of
animals that are in custody of the City of Schertz.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following explained below. Other duties may
be assigned. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with

1) All animals that are boarded in the shelter must be promptly cared for and maintained
on a frequent bases, which includes feeding, watering and examining the animals for
illness or injury. Work areas, cages, and equipment or kennels must be cleaned and
disinfected throughout the work day (i.e. ensure no cages or kennels are soiled and
odors are not apparent). Employees will also be required to groom and socialize with
the animals and on occasion may have to handle animals that are difficult to restrain.
Bathing of the animals may include treating for fleas, ticks, or other skin conditions.
Employees will be required to wash and dry towels and blankets, empty trash, sweep,
mop, spray down runs, sterilize water and food bowls, and patrol the shelter for any
additional needs deemed necessary. Provides coverage in the public areas including
staffing the front desk, dealing with the public in person and over the phone. Other
duties may be assigned as required. Although not a supervisor position, occasionally
provides direction and supervision to community service workers and volunteers.

2) Holding animals while a certified euthanasia officer performs euthanasia.
3) Assisting in the application of medications to sick or injured animals.
4) Assisting with the intake of animals.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an
employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing
the duties of this job, the employee will occasionally be required to work with toxic or caustic
chemicals and will regularly be required to work in wet or humid conditions, in outdoor
weather conditions, and may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level may
be loud at times.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will occasionally be required to climb,
balance, and run; will regularly be required to talk or hear; and will frequently be required
to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands or arms, stoop, kneel,
crouch or crawl, smell, and to lift up to one hundred pounds. Special vision requirements
include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and
ability to adjust focus.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND TRAINING:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty
satisfactorily.
• Language Skills 1) Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small
group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. 2)
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and
maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports.
• Mathematical Skills 1) Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions,
percentages, area and volume. 2) Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all
units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. 3) Ability
to apply concepts of basic math.
• Problem Solving Abilities 1) Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry
out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. 2) Ability to deal with
problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. 3) Can
explain records, procedures to others as lead worker. 4) Requires judgment
regarding use of equipment, tools or material.
• Specialized Skills and Abilities 1) Knowledge of animal types, species, and breed
identification. 2) Knowledge of humane animal care, capture, and restraint. 3)
Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively with members of the general public.
4) Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
Ability to take a teamwork approach to the job by cooperating with others, offering to help
others when needed, and considering larger organization or team goals rather than
individual concerns. Includes the ability to build a constructive team spirit where team
members are committed to the goals and objectives of the team.

EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
• One year experience and training in general kennel or shelter maintenance preferred.
• High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
