The Community Schertz is located in Bexar, Comal, and Guadalupe Counties The City of Schertz is accepting applications for the position of As- sistant Fire Chief to fill an upcoming vacancy at that position. The Schertz Fire Rescue Department employs 38 uniformed positions in two fire stations in this dynamic community. A third fire station is curranty in the design phase, with construction anticipated to start in the next couple of months. Serving a population of approximately 40,000 along the San Antonio-Austin Corridor, Schertz is a rapidly growing city with projections for the population to double within the next ten years. The department is expected to grow along with the community cre-ating an exciting opportunity in this progressive department. The department covers approximately 42 square miles. Schertz Fire Rescue is equipped with top of the line equipment and protective clothing. The Department is a learning organization that is proud of its training and professional development. Actual salary will be dependent on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. He/she assists the Fire Chief in creating and managing the annual budget, supervising Fire Suppression Personnel, coordinating assigned administrative duties, maintains the equipment and appa- ratus assigned to the department, and assisting with department dis- cipline. He/she should display a high level of professional decorum in all daily operations and interactions. Essential Job FUNCTIONS Assists in strategic planning for the Fire Department. Supervises the maintenance of shift schedules for the department. Assists in the development, training, and evaluation of personnel. Assists in the development and implementation of policies andprocedures. Monitors and evaluate the department’s methods of service deliv-ery; make recommendations for change; implement the changes Interprets, applies, and enforces city and department policies,procedures, and guidelines.Attends staff meetings. Enforces discipline throughout the department. Manages the requisition of supplies and keep related records. Prepares and reviews forms, run reports, schedules, and otheradministrative records and documents. Participates in the Fire Department’s medium and long rangeplanning processes as they pertain to individual areas of responsi-bility. Attends and participates in professional group meetings. Remains abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of fireand emergency services. City Vision Identifies opportunities for improvement and reviews with the Fire Chief. Directs the implementation of activities and improve- ments of divisions and programs assigned to his/her su- pervision. Ensures the investigation of all fires as outlined in the Department Standard Operating Guidelines. Serves as Fire Department liaison to the City’s Infor- mation Services Department. Responds to unpredictable emergency incidents for pro- longed periods of extreme physical exertion without ben- efit of warm-up, scheduled rest periods, meals, access to medication(s), or hydration. Operates fire apparatus or other vehicles in an emergency mode with emergency lights and sirens. Exercises critical, time-sensitive, complex problem solv- ing during physical exertion in stressful, hazardous envi- ronments such as hot, dark, tightly enclosed spaces that is further aggravated by fatigue, flashing lights, sirens, and other distractions. Performs other duties as assigned. Performs all duties, including firefighting, of the fire chief during sick leave, time off, and vacation. Serves in an on-call capacity to respond to emergencies and command all phases of the fire operations, and other related duties. Complete performance appraisals of direct subordinates and review performance appraisals of indirect subordi- nates. Essential Job Functions Cont Functions as an integral component of a team in which a sudden incapacitation of a member can result in mis- sion failure or in risk of injury or death to civilians or other team members. Performs various maintenance tasks on apparatus, equipment and station. Other duties as required by the Fire Chief. Certification, License and Special Require- ments Must be a resident of the City of Schertz or live within 15 miles of the City Municipal offices at 1400 Schertz Parkway. Requires: Fire Officer IV or (Texas Fire Chiefs Academy Graduate, or TEEX Fire Service Chief Executive Officer), NIMS (100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800), EMT-B certification from Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), Structural Certifi- cations by the Texas Commission of Fire Protec- tion. Requires a valid Class “B” Texas driver’s license and the ability to remain insurable under the city’s insurance policy.
