Members Present: Patti Dilworth, Juan Thorn, Ruth Tienor, Laura Wilson, Carol
Cyr, Patti Paulson, Margaret Riley, Neota Brady, Sandy Keiser, Joanne Ward, Dawn
Figueras, Bobbie Boyce. Melissa Uhlhorn, Library Director. Brian James, City
Manager's Office.
HEARING OF RESIDENTS: None
CALL TO ORDER: Patti Dilworth called the meeting to order at 6:33 p.m.
REGULAR AGENDA:
1. Minutes: Consideration and /or action regarding the approval of the minutes
of the June 5, 2017 meeting.
Ruth Tienor moved to accept the June 2017 Minutes with no corrections. Laura
Wilson seconded the motion. Motion carried. The June 5, 2017 Minutes were
approved with no corrections.
2. Treasurer's Reports: Consideration and /or action regarding the approval of
the May 2017 and June 2017 Treasurer's Reports.
The May 2017 Treasurer's Report reflected income of $1,557.43 and expenses of
$241.29 leaving a balance of $17,991.37 in the cash account.
The June 2017 Treasurer's Report reflected income of $1,695.55 and expenses of
$1,140 leaving a balance of $18,546.92 in the cash account.
Joanne Ward moved to accept the May 2017 and June 2017 Treasurer's Reports as
presented. Margaret Riley seconded the motion. The motion carried. The May
2017 and June 2017 Treasurer's Reports were approved.
3. Librarian Report: Librarian reported on the following items;
Library Operations:
- Avery successful End of Summer children's party was hosted by April Toman.
- A fully- integrated online reading program tracking system (Bean Stack) is in effect,
which is categorized by age and has already received positive feedback from users.
- The recent mini golf fundraising event is considered successful; however, exact
fundraising figures will be available at a later date.
- There are plans to mount iPads for card catalog purposes within the children's
library.
- Melissa Uhlhorn asked for feedback from the Board regarding their thoughts on
the monthly statistics. Members expressed that the monthly statistics are
interesting and had no requests for changes.
- There are upcoming visits planned with area schools to again remind teachers,
counselors and librarians about the resources of the tutoring program, Brain Fuse,
which is offered by the Schertz library. Usage statistics will continue to be tracked.
4. Bookstore Report: Committee reported on the following items:
General Operations:
- The August 4 and 5, 2017 Book Sale was very successful including sale earnings of
$1206 and store sales of over $400 during the same 2 -day period, which is
significantly higher than a typical bookstore 2 -day period.
- 2 new bookstore volunteers have been trained and are available for volunteer
service.
- The bookstore volunteer handbook is currently undergoing a revision.
- New consignment vendors are being considered. One of the vendor options has an
online store, which would be similar to Amazon and would be managed by that
vendor directly.
- There were discussions regarding the consideration of displaying a temporary
marquee /sign for advertising purposes (Elbel /Schertz Parkway).
- There were discussions regarding ideas for restocking children's books
throughout the Book Sale as they sell out very quickly on the first morning.
5. Committees of Committees Advisory Board(CCAB) Update: Brian James
Topics discussed included the following_
- New community meetings and Council On The Go meetings are being well- received
by citizens.
- The City continues to look for better ways to communicate with citizens including
social media.
- City sports fields will continue to be mainly reserved for leagues vs. events for
additional revenue.
- Upcoming Council meetings will include budget presentations.

DISCUSSION & POSSIBLE ACTION:
6. Library Board Officer Election: Patti Dilworth
- The following Board members will continue in their current Board role: Patti
Dilworth, Chairman; Laura Wilson, Treasurer and Shonale Burke, Secretary. Joanne
Ward will continue as bookstore manager. Juan Thorne will remain on the Board;
however, Patti Paulson will take over his role as Vice Chair.
7. Budget Discussion: Melissa Uhlhorn
- The proposed and recommended 2017 -2018 Budget for the library is $921,998
and the proposed and recommended 2017 -2018 Budget for the Library Board is
$22,500. Both budgets will be presented to the Schertz citizens in upcoming City
Council meetings. Three requests that were declined include upgrading a part -time
library position to full -time, additional sound - proofing in meeting rooms and other
areas and additional materials.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
8. Items by the Library Board Members: Briefing on the following items:
- Correspondence received by the Secretary: None received.
-Other announcements by Library Board Members: None.
-Call for items to be included on the next agenda: Brian James stated there will be a
need to discuss the library parking situation due to challenges with the Clemens
High School parking dilemma due to their construction.
ADJOURNMENT:
Ruth Tienor moved to adjourn the meeting. Patti Paulson seconded the motion. The
motion carried. The meeting was adjourned at 7:40 p.m. Next month's meeting will
'be-- ember 11 017.
