This is a entry-level, professional fire-
fighter, full-time position in Schertz Fire Rescue.
The Community
Schertz is located in Bexar, Comal, and Guadalupe Counties
The City of Schertz is accepting applications for the position of Certified
or Non-Certified Firefighter to fill upcoming vacancies. The Schertz Fire
Rescue Department employs 41 uniformed positions in two fire stations in
this dynamic community. A third fire station is curranty in the design
phase, with construction anticipated to start in the next couple of months.
Serving a population of 40,000 along the San Antonio-Austin Corridor,
Schertz is a rapidly growing city with projections for the population to double within the next ten years. The department is expected to grow
along with the community creating an exciting opportunity in this progres-
sive department. The department covers approximately 42 square miles.
Schertz Fire Rescue is equipped with top of the line equipment and protec-
tive clothing. The Department is a learning organization that is proud of its

In 2013, the city was identified as one of the safest cities in Texas by Safe-
wise, a home security company, which ranked Schertz No. 28 on a list of
the 50 Safest Cities in Texas. The city was also noted by CNN Money
Magazine in 2013 for its contribution to Guadalupe county, which was
rated at No. 4 on their list of “Where the jobs are” with a 12.2% job
growth rate.
Schertz has dedicated significant resources to building a quality Parks and
Recreation program. Presently, the city maintains 13 developed city parks,
covering more than 340 acres. The city has also identified an additional
eight park locations, covering more than 33 acres that are undeveloped or
are in the initial stages of development.
Government
The City of Schertz operates under a Council-Manager form of govern-
ment. The City Council shall be composed of the Mayor and seven Coun-
cilmembers. The City Manager oversees the work of over 350 full-time
employees, an annual budget of over $70 million and 15 departments in-
cluding Police, Fire, Finance, Courts Services, Economic Development,
Public Works, Development Services, Parks & Recreation, Human Re-
sources, Communications, and Information Technology.

The annual starting salary for this position is:
$42,099 (With TCFP and DSHS EMS Certifications $38,896 (With One Certification) $34,528 (While working to complete Certifications) The City has an exceptional benefits package including medical, dental and vision insurance, 20-year TMRS retirement with 5-year vesting and 2:1 City match, vacation and holidays.

Job Summary
The City of Schertz is accepting applications for the position of Cer-

establish an eligibility list that will remain in effect for a period of

Essential Job Functions
•Performs fire-fighting tasks while wearing a SCBA (e.g., hoseline op-erations, extensive crawling, lifting and carrying heavy objects, venti-lating roofs or walls using power or hand tools, forcible entry), rescueoperations, and other emergency response actions under stressful con-ditions including working in extremely hot or cold environments forprolonged time periods of time.
•Handles exposure to toxic fumes, irritants, particulates, biological(infectious) and nonbiological hazards, and/or heated gases, despite theuse of personal protective ensembles and SCBA.
•Climbs six or more flights of stairs while wearing a fire protective en-semble, including SCBA, weighing at least 50 lb (22.6 kg) or more andcarrying equipment/tools weighing an additional 20 to 40 lb (9 to 18kg).
•Wears a fire protective ensemble that is encapsulating and insulatedand will result in significant fluid loss that frequently progresses toclinical dehydration and can elevate core temperature to levels exceed-ing 102.2°F (39°C).
•Searches, finds, and rescues civilians by dragging or carrying victimsranging from newborns to adults weighing over 200 lb (90 kg) to safetydespite hazardous conditions and low visibility.
•Works with water-filled hoselines up to 2 1/2 in. (65 mm) in diameterfrom fire apparatus to occupancy [approximately 150 ft (50 m)], whichcan involve negotiating multiple flights of stairs, ladders, and otherobstacles.
•Operates fire apparatus or other vehicles in an emergency mode withemergency lights and sirens.

team members.
•Performs various maintenance tasks on apparatus, equip-
ment and station.
•Works under direction of a supervisor, performs inspec-
tions, and clerical duties as required.

•No certifications are required to test (Schertz Fire
Rescue will assist employees with completing re-
quired certifications)
•Structural Certification by the Texas Commission
of Fire Protection. (Within one year of employ-

•EMT-B certification from Texas Department of
State Health Services (DSHS), (Within one year of
employment)
•Requires a valid Class “B” Texas driver’s license
and the ability to remain insurable under the city’s
insurance policy.
•Preference may be given to applicants who have:
Structural Firefighter Certification from Texas
Commission on Fire Protection, or
Licensed/Certified EMT - Basic or higher from
Texas Department of State Health Services.

ment and methods used in combating, extinguishing and
preventing fires and in rescue work
•Knowledge of rules and regulations of the fire depart-
ment

quickly diagnose and treat human injuries
•Knowledge of building construction and related codes,
electric power codes, hydraulics and the location of haz-
ardous occupancies in the municipality

poor visibility, and drenching from hoselines and/or
fixed protection systems (sprinklers)
